Roberta A. and William W. Allen Chemistry Graduate Study Incentive Scholarship
Awarded annually to chemistry graduates of UW-L who enroll in chemistry or chemical engineering graduate programs. Recipients are eligible only once--at the time of admission to the first graduate program attended after graduation for UW-L.
Criteria:
- Based on application and recommendations from the chemistry department faculty, considering demonstrated scholarship, leadership, and potential for future success in chemistry or chemical engineering graduate program.
- special application required and available in the chemistry department
William W. Allen Chemistry Scholarship
Honors a former student and 1979 Chancellor's Award recipient of UW-L. Mr. Allen was a research chemist and administrator with Dow Chemical for 40 years.
Criteria:
- based on application and recommendations from the chemistry department faculty, considering demonstrated scholarship, leadership, and potential for future success
- special application required and available in the chemistry department
American Association of University Women Scholarship in Math & Science
Established by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to recognize academic excellence in the math or science department.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in math or science
Robert W. and Beverly J. Batchelder Fund for Health, Physical Education and Recreation
Established by Beverly, '75 graduate of a master's degree, and Robert, '51 graduate in the College of HPER, to support students in the College of HPER. Robert taught in the physical education department from 1956-1988.
Criteria:
- senior (90 semester credits or more) admitted to teacher education to be enrolled full time
- major in exercise & sport science or a double major in exercise & sport science and health education
- male in odd-numbered years and female in even-numbered years
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- financial need should be considered
- committee shall take into consideration the recipient's extracurricular activities
MaryCatherine Batten Award in Teacher Education
Established in 1978 by a member of the class of 1933 who taught for many years in the Milwaukee school system.
Criteria:
- senior to be enrolled full time admitted to the School of Education or Exercise Science, Health and Recreation
- one-half of recipients shall be male and one-half of recipients shall be female
- preference first given to students with less than a 3.5 gpa
- selected in terms of humanistic criteria rather than scholastic achievement
- based on sensitivity to student's individual needs; openness to ideas generated by students; ability to establish trust relationships; demonstration of sense of humor; and compatibility and consistency in managing students
- must display outstanding teaching potential

Kathleen Lynn (Moulis) Beyer Memorial Scholarship
Criteria:
- recipient must be enrolled full time with a major in occupational therapy, i.e., enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Program;
- recipient must be in good academic standing with above average grade point average;
- financial need should be considered;
- in awarding these scholarships, preference shall be given to Wisconsin residents.
Bridget Belgiovine Scholarship Fund in Sport Administration
Established in honor of Bridget Belgiovine when she left her position as Athletic Director of UW-L.
Criteria:
- preference given to female graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in sport administration
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- renewable up to three years if at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa is maintained
Chet Bradley Scholarship Fund in School Health Education
Established in honor of Chet, a '66 UW-L master of science graduate, retiring in the School of Health Education in the Department of Public Instruction.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in school health education or a major in elementary education with a minor in school health education
- at least a 2.75 gpa
- show strong commitment to the teaching profession in general, school health education specifically
- show strong evidence of leadership and future success as teacher
- demonstrate positive relationships with others
Roger Brochhausen Scholarship in Special (Adapted) Physical Education
Established in memory of Roger by his parents. Roger suffered from muscular dystrophy and participated in some "M.D. dances" sponsored by campus organizations and interacted well with the special (adaptive) physical education people with whom he came into contact.
Criteria:
- junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time with a concentration, emphasis, minor or major in special (adapted) physical education
- above average grade point average
- as a "tie-breaker" only, committee will give preference to a resident of the City of Onalaska
- application must include at least one written recommendation from a faculty member in special (adapted) physical education attesting to applicant's person-to-person skills and outstanding potential in this field
LaVerne L. Buldhaupt Endowment Fund in Biology
Established in Buldhaput's memory by family and friends. Buldhaupt came to UW-L in 1961 and retired from the biology department in June of 1996.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in biology, not microbiology
- above average grade point
- financial need should be considered
- must be a well rounded student with an established record of participation and leadership in extracurricular activities
Kenneth and Marilyn Buresh Minority Scholarship in Allied Health
Established to honor the Buresh's daughter, Ellen Buresh Finch, a '77 graduate in mass communications at UW-L.
Criteria:
- freshman, sophomore, junior or senior minority student to be enrolled full time with a major in the allied health field
- good academic standing
- financial need shall be considered
- selection committee shall renew the scholarship to a qualified student
Gretchen D. Burkhart Memorial Award
Established in memory of Gretchen by Marilyn Burkhart. Marilyn is a '76 UW-L graduate from Therapeutic Recreation.
Criteria:
- preference given to a non-traditional student to be enrolled full time with a major in therapeutic recreation
- at least a 2.75 gpa
- must have completed at least RTH 250 and RTH 326 or RTH 327
- demonstrate integrity and professional behavior, involvement in volunteer/service oriented activities and exhibits dedication to the field of therapeutic recreation
- special application required and available from Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation Department
Robert M. Burns Scholarship in Medical Microbiology
Established by the UW-L Microbiology faculty and staff, alumni and family in honor of Robert Burns' retirement as professor of biology/microbiology at UW-L for 30 years. Dr. Burns was responsible for the development of the major in Microbiology and dedicated his career to providing microbiology students an excellent background in medical microbiology.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in microbiology
- must have been a UW-L student for at least one year
- at least a 3.25 gpa
- must have taken Pathogenic Bacteriology
William R. Carlson Fund in Commercial Recreation
William R. Carlson is a '69 graduate who established this fund to support the department of recreation management and therapeutic recreation.
Criteria:
- one award made to a junior or senior and one award made to a graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in recreation management with an emphasis in commercial recreation
- at least a 2.85 gpa
- demonstrate leadership as a student in the commercial recreation field
- financial need may be considered
- special application required and available from the Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation Department along with 2 letters of recommendation from department faculty members
Genevieve Carnes Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by Clark Carnes to honor his late wife, mother of Doug and Scott, a 1936 graduate of UW-L and former Women's Physical Education Director of Appleton and Neenah High Schools.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time majoring in exercise & sport science
- good academic standing
Edith Cartwright Scholarship in Education
Established by the friends and family of Edith J. Cartwright who served as Dean of Women at UW-L for many years.
Criteria:
- junior to be enrolled full time in the School of Education with a declared major in elementary education, secondary education, or physical education
- above average grade point average
- financial need should be considered
- involved in extracurricular activities on campus

Nellie Case Chemistry Scholarship
Established by Nellie Case for chemistry students.
Criteria:
- to be enrolled full time as a chemistry major
- good academic standing
- financial need should be considered
- La Crosse residents are given first priority
- based on recommendations from chemistry faculty
- special application available from the chemistry department
Chemistry Department Scholarship in Biochemistry at UW-La Crosse
Established by the Chemistry Department for scholarships for students majoring in biochemistry
Criteria:
- senior to be enrolled full time with a major in biochemistry
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- application must have successfully completed Chemistry 417 and either be currently enrolled or have successfully completed Chemistry 418
- must demonstrate experience in a field of chemistry as an intern or in undergraduate research
Margaret Chew Sophomore Scholarships for Geography Majors
Established to honor late Professor Margaret Chew who served the UW-L Department of Geography and Earth Science for many years.
- number of awards: Up to two awards per academic year
- amount of each award: $500 per award
- sophomore to be enrolled full time with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and at least a 3.5 GPA in geography and earth science
- a 200-250 word typed statement explaining why the applicant has chosen geography as a major
Roland W. and Laura J. Christensen Scholarship in Mathematics
Established to honor Roland for receiving the first National Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997. Roland also served on the mathematics faculty for 32 years.
Criteria:
- freshman, sophomore, junior or senior (preferably but not necessarily a male) to be enrolled full time with a declared major or minor in mathematics
- at least a 3.0 gpa in mathematics, provided, however, that this grade point requirement may be waived by the Committee for special or extraordinary circumstances demonstrated by an applicant
- demonstrate interest in sport and fitness
- preference shall be given to students who have a demonstrated interest in teaching mathematics
- selection committee shall renew the scholarship to a qualified student through their fourth year provided they continue to meet all of the criteria set forth above to the satisfaction of the Committee
Harold A. Classen Scholarship in the Department of Geography
Established to honor Harold Classen who served the geography department at UW-L for many years.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a geography major
- at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa with at least a 3.35 gpa in geography
D.O. Coate and Emerson G. Wulling Scholarship
Given as a testimonial of the fine work done by Mr. Coate as a teacher and leader of boys, given by members of the Beta Sigma Chi fraternity. Mr. Coate was instrumental in establishing this fraternity.
Criteria:
- senior all-around male to be enrolled full time
- be preparing for the profession of teaching and must expect to receive his degree within the next year
- average or better academic standing
- outstanding in personality, a social mixer; one who has done much for the school in varied activities
- genial person who loves his fellow men and is liked by them
- ambition for further education, have some idea of what it is to be and be making definite progress toward it

Milford A. and Mildred E. Cowley Scholarship
Established by Dr. Milford Cowley, a former chemistry professor, and his wife Mildred.Criteria:
- upper level chemistry student to be enrolled full time with a major in chemistry

Anna Beth Culver Endowment Scholarship for Health, Physical Education and Athletic Training
Established by alumni and friends in honor of Anna Beth Culver, faculty member of the health and physical education departments from 1966-1992.Criteria:
- undergraduate student having already earned 10 credits in the declared major or minor
- on a rotating basis for 2008-09 major or minor in exercise sport & science; for 2009-10 major or minor in athletic training; and for 2010-11 major or minor in health
- in odd-numbered years awarded to a male and even-numbered years to a female
- at least a 2.95 gpa
- financial need may be considered
- committee shall consider leadership potential, extracurricular involvement and service to the chosen field

Jerry Culver Scholarship Endowment Fund in Geography
Fund established by family and friends in memory of Jerry Culver who was on the geography faculty for 27 years.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in geography
- at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa and at least a 3.25 gpa in geography/earth science
Alice DeBower Undergraduate Distinguished Service Award for Graduating Seniors in Recreation Management & Therapeutic Recreation
Established to honor Alice DeBower who served the UW-L recreation and parks department for 25 years.
Criteria:
- graduating senior who has demonstrated professional promise and in recognition of outstanding recreation leadership to the recreation clubs (Rec Club, TR Club, Rho Phi Lambda) and UW-L
- gpa of 3.5 or greater
- member of the Recreation Majors Club during entire junior and senior years
- good standing in the club
- to be voted on by senior members during their last three semesters at UW-L

Alice DeBower Recreation Alumni Scholarship
Established by Alice DeBower to recognize a student's dedication to the field of recreation.
Criteria:
- junior majoring in recreation to be enrolled full time
- must have been enrolled in the program for a minimum of two semesters and have at least a 3.0 gpa
- must be a member of the Recreation Majors' Club or WPRA or TR Club or Rho Phi Lambda or should be involved in at least one of NRPA, RCRC, NESRA, ACA, or Rho Phi Lambda
- have shown enthusiastic dedication by involvement in campus and off campus activities, i.e., volunteer/paid work with leisure service agencies

Delta Kappa Gamma--Theta Chapter Scholarship
Presented by the professional honorary educational society, composed of educators in the La Crosse area.
Criteria:

Michael J. and Sandra R. Dolan Endowment Fund in Chemistry
Michael and Sandra, both '73 graduates, established this fund for chemistry.
Criteria:
- at least a second semester freshman to be enrolled full time with a major in chemistry
- at least a 3.25 gpa
- financial need may be considered
- special application required and available from the chemistry department accompanied by 2 letters of recommendation from the chemistry faculty
Jerry Faust/Burger King Scholarship Fund
Established in 1977 to honor Jerry Faust, football player who was the recipient of the Burger King Scholar Athlete Award for academic and athletic achievement.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in biology
- at least a 2.5 gpa
- first preference given to students from the Kiel, Wisconsin, area
- renewable up to three years if all criteria above is met
Art and Fern Finley Endowment Fund in Leadership/Exercise & Sport Science
The family of Art and Fern Finley established this fund at the time of their induction into the UW-La Crosse Wall of Fame. They befriended students by sponsoring them in various organizations and supporting campus groups.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time majoring in exercise & sport science
- at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa
- preference should be given to students of Irish descent
Charles "Ben" and Marian Ford Scholarship
This scholarship is provided as a tribute to the contributions that Ben and Marian have made to public education and the La Crosse community. Ben graduated from La Crosse State Teachers College in 1935 with a BA in physical education. Marian attended La Crosse State Teachers College and received an elementary education teaching certificate.
Criteria:
- sophomore or junior to be enrolled full time with a major in exercise & sport science
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- awarded to an outstanding student planning a career in physical education
- contributor to UW-L community by involvement in extracurricular activities
- scholarship is full tuition
Oren E. Frazee Scholarship
Presented in memory of Oren Frazee who was the head of the biology department at UW-L from 1920-1950.
Criteria:
- junior in the sixth semester earning at least 50 credits from UW-L to be enrolled full time with a major or minor in biological science
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- to qualify, a recipient should be of good moral character, show promise of scholarly achievement and have won approval by members of the biology department
Keith French Scholarship in Physical Education
Fund's purpose shall be to support the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, in cooperation with the Physical Education Center for Excellence at UW-L. Awards made by the committee on the following priority basis: academic program enrichment, student assistantships and scholarships.
Criteria:
If the committee elects to disburse all or some of the spendable proceeds for scholarships, the following criteria applies:
- currently enrolled graduate student in exercise and sport science full or part time
- preference given to a married graduate student
- at least a 3.5 gpa

Criteria:
- female enrolled full time with a major in mathematics
- junior or senior
Ernest & Olive Gershon Scholarship
Ernest Gershon was a member of the physical education faculty from 1946 to 1983.
Criteria:
- sophomore to be enrolled full time with a major in teacher education in physical education, elementary education or secondary education
- at least a 2.9 cumulative gpa
- must be a participant in a variety of extracurricular activities and have experiences in leadership
- in addition, if such a student should be engaged in research in teacher education, he/she shall be given special consideration
Jean and William Gilles Scholarship Fund for Third Year Physical Therapy
Internships
Criteria:
- must be enrolled full time in the physical therapy program at UW-L,
as well as in his or her third year internships
- must be in good academic standing
- financial need should be considered
- shall be a person who demonstrates compassion, dedication to
service, extraordinary professional commitment as well as excellent
interpersonal and clinical skills
- award shall be used as financial assistance for recipient's
costs and expenses related to performance of his or her third year
physical therapy internships
James A. Gould Memorial Scholarship Fund in Physical Therapy
Established by family and friends in memory of Jim Gould, who was an associate professor in the physical therapy department for 20 years.
Criteria:
- graduate student to be enrolled full time in the physical therapy program
- above average gpa
- financial need should be considered but not be the sole determinant
James A. and Deborah K. Gould Scholarship Fund in Physical Therapy
Established by James and Deborah Gould for support in the professional physical therapy program. James was an associate professor in the physical therapy department since 1975.

- graduate student to be enrolled full time physical therapy program

- financial need should be considered but not the sole determinant
John Gruden Memorial Scholarship
Established by the friends and family in memory of John Gruden, a senior majoring in computer science and mathematics at UW-L, at the time of his death in 1985.
Criteria:
- junior who has graduated from La Crescent High School to be enrolled full time with a major in computer science or mathematics
- financial need should be considered
- if a number of students meet the criteria, then other qualifications such as involvement in extracurricular activities on campus and individual leadership qualities should be considered
Partners of Gundersen Lutheran Scholarship Endowment for Allied Health Professions
Scholarship is to assist outstanding full time students having a genuine financial need, pursuing health career degrees applicable to hospital/clinic needs.
Criteria:
- senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time pursuing a health career degree applicable to hospital/clinic needs
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- genuine financial need (taking into consideration the resources available to the individual through family and spouse is preferred but condition of financial need should not prohibit a superior student from receiving this scholarship)
Frederick Hagerman Award in the College of Science and Health
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student enrolled full time in the College of Science and Health with an interest of physiology in exercise
Troy Harcey/Burger King Endowed Scholarship Fund in Education
Established in 1996 to honor Troy Harcey, football player who was the recipient of the Burger King Scholar Athlete Award for academic and athletic achievement.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in the field of education
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- financial need may be considered
- recipient's character, leadership and rich contributions to the UW-L campus and La Crosse community life to be considered

Ray Heath Scholarship Fund in Chemistry
Established in memory of Ray Heath who taught chemistry at Aquinas High School from 1967 until his retirement in 1990. Ray was a teacher who "turned you on" to chemistry. The memorial is a way to honor all outstanding chemistry teachers as exemplified by Ray Heath.
Criteria:
- completed the freshman status in chemistry to be enrolled full time with a major in chemistry
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- special application available from the chemistry department
Herb Heili Cardiac Rehabilitation Graduate Study Program Scholarship
Scholarship established in honor of Herb Heili to support the Cardiac Rehabilitation Graduate Program
Criteria:
- graduate student enrolled full time in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Graduate Study Program and completed at least one semester
- first preference is given to a Wisconsin resident
- above average grade point average
- financial need may be considered
- recipient to receive a check in May

Myrtle Dahlen Johnson Endowment Fund
Bequest from Myrtle Dahlen Johnson, a friend of the University, to support health education and health promotion or exercise & sport science in medical or food science studies at UW-L.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in health education and health promotion or exercise and sport science in medical or food science studies dealing with the human diet as it affects health
- above average grade point average
Craig Kusick Jr. Endowment Scholarship Fund in Exercise & Sport Science
Established by family and friends of Craig who was the recipient of the Melberger Award to recognize the Outstanding Division III football player in the country.

- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in exercise & sport science
- good academic standing
- financial need should be considered
La Crosse County Medical Alliance Scholarship in Honor of Dorothy Wolf
Established by the La Crosse County Medical Alliance in honor of Dorothy Wolf, a 1930 graduate of UW-L. This scholarship is for someone planning a career in a hospital or clinic setting in wellness and fitness.
Criteria
- must be planning a career in a health care facility (such as a hospital, clinic, nursing home, rehabilitation or long term facility) that promotes recovery, rehabilitation, wellness or fitness
- sophomore standing completed at least 30 credits at the start of the fall semester to be enrolled full time majoring in the College of Science & Health
- must have at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa
- financial need is a primary consideration by filing the FAFSA form and must have a financial need rating from the Financial Aid Office
La Crosse County Medical Alliance Scholarship
Established by the La Crosse County Medical Alliance for someone planning a career in a hospital or clinic setting in wellness and fitness.
Criteria:

Steven P. Larsen Memorial Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Steve, a 1978 UW-L graduate in Physical Education Teaching.
Criteria:
- junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in exercise sport & science, health education & promotion or sport administration
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- financial need may be considered but not to be a determinant
- must show through extracurricular activities, involvement, etc a true commitment to their field and, in particular, working with children
- demonstrate that they are a "well rounded" individual through their extracurricular activities or other involvement
Robert E. Lee Scholarship
Memorial to a former biology teacher, Mr. Lee, who served the university from 1964-1973.
Criteria:
- undergraduate or graduate to be enrolled full time to an outstanding biology major with demonstrated abilities in field studies
- at least a 3.5 gpa
Robert O. LeRoy Family Memorial Scholarship
Established by Robert O. LeRoy who served as the university registrar for many years. Awarded to a student of the adult fitness/cardiac rehabilitation master of science degree program at UW-L who has demonstrated outstanding scholastic and research abilities.
Criteria:
- graduate student in the adult fitness/cardiac rehabilitation master of science degree program
- demonstrated outstanding scholastic and research abilities
- no application required--selected by LEHP faculty
Esther and Sam Levy Memorial Scholarship
James Howard Lewis established this fund in memory of his mother, Esther, and stepfather, Sam Levy, for students majoring in health sciences.
Criteria:
- recipient must be enrolled full time with a major in health sciences (pre med program and such programs as nuclear medicine technology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistance studies, radiation therapy and clinical laboratory sciences) in the College of Science & Allied Health
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- may be a junior, senior or graduate student
- financial need should be considered
Dr. C. W. Lighthizer Pre-Med Scholarship
Established by Robert and Gretchen Lighthizer Burns to honor Gretchen's father, Charles Lighthizer, on the anniversary of his 50th year in medical practice.
Criteria:
- senior to be enrolled full time to an outstanding pre-med candidate
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- involved in extracurricular activities
- academic record in science and humanities
- proven genuine concern for his fellow man through his/her activities and personal traits
Logan Math & Computer Science Scholarship
Established through the La Crosse Community Foundation by Anthony and Barbara Barkauskas both UW-L faculty members. Anthony is a Mathematics faculty member and Barbara is a Computer Science faculty member.
Criteria:
- be a graduate of Logan High School enrolled full time at UW-L with a major in computer science.
- have received a B or better in one of the following classes taken at UWL: MTH 207, MTH 208, C-S 120 or C-S 220 (or the course numbers that replace them in future catalogs) These are calculus and programming classes that count toward a math or computer sicence major at UW-L
- one academic letter from a teacher or advisor required
- a short essay is required explaining: How you expect to benefit from your educational experience and why you are applying for this scholarship
Eric Stuart McIlraith Scholarship in Chemistry
Established by the family and friends of Eric McIlraith in 1988.

Established by Stuart and Lorraine McIlraith to support student scholarships in geography at UW-L.

Beverly was a '53 UW-L graduate in HPER. Fund was established by family and friends to support physical education.

- committee shall consider the following preferences in making the selections: an applicant who has a parent, grandparent or sibling who is an alumni of UW-L or an applicant who has demonstrated interest and love for the game of golf as might be demonstrated by team or league participation at any level
- in the selection process the Committee shall identify all applicants who meet the criteria for this scholarship and make a prioritized list of said qualified applicants and thereupon selection shall go to the highest prioritized applicant unless disqualified in which case the selection process shall continue in a like fashion by priority until an available qualified applicant is selected
Patricia Mertens Scholarship Fund in the Exercise & Sport Science and School of Education
This fund was established by family and friends to recognize Patricia's outstanding service to the students and alumni of UW-La Crosse. Patricia retired from the UW-L Career Services in 1995.

- in odd-numbered years major in exercise & sport science and in even-numbered years a major in School of Education

UW-L Microbiology Scholarship
Established by the Microbiology Faculty and alumni to support Microbiology majors.

- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in microbiology

Microbiology/Public Health Scholarship
Established by Haydee Dabritz, a 2002 Microbiology graduate, for a Microbiology student interested in Public Health.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in microbiology
- must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in immunology (MIC 406)
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- preference shall be given for students in a pre-professional program (medicine, veterinary medicine, etc.) or who are committed to a career in immunology or epidemiology/public health
Neil M. Mighall Fund in Chemistry
Because of his excellent training and respect of the faculty in the chemistry department, Dr. Mighall, '75 graduate, established this fund to support students in the chemistry department.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in chemistry
- at least a 3.0 gpa or have in some other manner demonstrated to the committee potential for success as a chemistry major
- financial need may be considered
- must be a United States citizen or a permanent resident

Leon & Ruth Miller Scholarship in Exercise & Sport Science
Established in 1987 by the Millers to recognize academic excellence in exercise & sport science.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in exercise & sport science
- male in odd-numbered years; female in even-numbered years
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- financial need should be considered
- skill and enthusiasm in the teaching field, good character, with evidence of leadership
Pam Mouchka Memorial Scholarship in Physical Education/Health
Named for a 1984 graduate who lost her life in 1985. Pam was a member of the sports medicine program as well as other campus organizations and activities.
Criteria:
- completed three years at UW-L to be enrolled full time with one of the following major/minor combinations--double major in exercise & sport science and health; health major and exercise & sport science minor; or exercise & sport science major and health minor
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- involvement in extracurricular activities such as working with an athletic trainer or by doing some additional coaching
Allen C. Nelson Biology Scholarship Fund
Established by Allen Nelson, an emeriti biology/microbiology faculty on staff 1964-1996, for students in biology
Criteria:
- senior with at least 90 credits and not more than 115 credits of which no more than 18 credits may be transfer credits to be enrolled full time with a major in biology or microbiology
- may not be a pre-physical therapy or pre-physician assistant student
- at least a 3.65 gpa
Allen C. Nelson Scholarship Endowment Fund in Mycology
The UW-L Microbiology faculty and alumni established this Fund in honor of Allen Nelson, an emeriti faculty in the Biology/Microbiology Department. Dr. Nelson taught the first UW-L microbiology course and is responsible for the development of an exceptional mycology program at UW-La Crosse.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in microbiology or biology
- must have taken at least one mycology course and/or conducted research in mycology
- above average gpa
Dr. Aline Fournier Nieckarz Memorial Scholarship in Organic Chemistry
Established to honor a student or students who best master the technique and practice of organic laboratory performance as exemplified by Dr. Nieckarz's teaching.
Criteria:
- nominated by the chemistry staff teaching organic laboratory from the pool of students who completed a chemistry major-level organic laboratory course in the previous calendar year
- students in any major who meet the above requirements are eligible for consideration
- in the event of nearly equal recommendations, the students with a declared chemistry major will be given preference
- good academic standing
- must return to UW-L the following academic year
- special application available from the chemistry department
William J. Nieckarz Scholarship in Nuclear Medicine Technology
Established by family and friends of Dr. Nieckarz at his retirement from the chemistry department in 1999. He had been in the chemistry department since 1969.
Criteria:
- junior standing to be enrolled full time in the nuclear medicine technology program
- accepted for an internship for their senior year at one of or hospitals or clinics affiliated with UW-La Crosse's NMT Program
- financial need may be considered
Jess Ondell Scholarship Fund in Chemistry and Biology
Established by Jess Ondell ('73) to support students in chemistry and biology. Jess served on the UW-L Foundation Board.
Criteria:
- undergraduate to be enrolled full time already earned 15 credit hours in declared major or minor in chemistry or biology, including microbiology and aquatic sciences
- recipient's home mailing address must be from one of the following: Prairie du Chien, Menomonie, Rice Lake, Baraboo, Portage, Beaver Dam, all Wisconsin; Decorah, Iowa; La Crescent, Minnesota
- financial need may be considered but only as a single, and not necessarily deciding factor
- over long period, the committee shall as equitably as possible choose recipients from each of the foregoing mailing addresses
- over any 10 year period, no more than 60 percent of the awards shall be directed to chemistry or biology students
Dr. William "Bill" Otto--Rho Phi Lambda Scholarship
Established in honor of Dr. William "Bill" Otto for his service to the department of recreation management and therapeutic recreation.
Criteria:
- graduating senior in the spring or August graduate in the same year with a major in recreation
- must be a member for at least two semesters of Rho Phi Lambda by being an active and contributing member
- active in other club memberships
- graduating senior with at least 3.0 gpa who is a member of the Rho Phi Lambda Fraternity

Tony and Rick Palmer Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Tony and Rick Palmer by their family and friends to support scholarships in physical therapy.

- graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in physical therapy

- there are three priority evaluation guidelines: a. attitude/character--someone viewing PT as a "calling" not a job, very giving person, not a taker, totally patient oriented, selfless and totally professional with regard to patient; b. If candidate can't be distinguished under a., then the candidate with financial need; and c. If evaluating priorities a. & b. and no candidate, then the best collegiate academic record (gpa) should be considered
Palmer Peterson Family Scholarship in Environmental Studies
Established by Palmer Peterson, class of 1939, who grew up in the Cashton area, and has a deep appreciation for preservation of woodlands and wildlife in the Coulee Region.

UW-L Physical Therapy Alumni & Friends Scholarships
Established by alumni and friends of the physical therapy department to support students in the physical therapy program
Criteria:
- graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in physical therapy
- good academic standing
- financial need and leadership role in the class will be considered in the selection process
- PT Alumni Committee will select the scholarship recipient(s) after receiving input from the PT Department faculty
UW-L Physical Therapy Club Scholarship
Established by the Physical Therapy Club in support of physical therapy students.
Criteria:
- graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in physical therapy
- must be active in the Physical Therapy Club for two years and at the time of application
- must be involved on campus and in community service
Physical Therapy Program Minority Scholarship
Established by the Physical Therapy Department for minority student with an interest in physical therapy.
Criteria:
- junior to be enrolled full time with any declared major in the University
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- financial need can be considered
- must demonstrate an interest in physical therapy as evidenced by taking pre-requisite coursework to qualify for admission in a physical therapy educational program
Wisconsin Physical Therapy Association West Central District Scholarship
Established by the West Central District of WPTA for physical therapy students.
Criteria:
- graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in physical therapy
- good academic standing
- must have been a member of the WPTA for at least two years
Ryan Michael Poehling Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by the Hank and Sandra Poehling family of La Crosse in honor of Ryan M. Poehling, a 1995 graduate of UW-L who majored in geography. Ryan died of cancer in Gainesville, Florida, on December 17, 2000.
Criteria:
- at least a junior standing at the time he/she receives the award with a major in geography
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- the following will be weighed in evaluating student applicants: overall grade point average as well as geography-earth science gpa; record of involvement in extracurricular affairs, either in geography or otherwise; record of responsibility, including the satisfactory completion of all course and research-related work; potential as a future geography scholar; student essays-which will be required as part of the application process-describing the student(s) future professional plans, including plans for graduate study in geography. Students selected must--to a maximum extent possible--personify the virtues of optimism and appreciation-of-life which characterized Ryan Poehling. Students must have a demonstrated interest in attending graduate school in geography. The evaluation of the students to determine if they fulfill the special requirements of the Ryan Poehling Scholarship will be facilitated by the following: faculty discussion at the time of the award of the extent to which student applicants embody the spirit of Ryan and the evaluation of student essays submitted as part of the application process.

Cindi Stoller Polek Scholarships in Physical Therapy
Established by Richard Polek in memory of his wife Cindi who was a '81 graduate in the physical therapy department. A $1 million gift from the Ernest Matejaitis' estate, now allows this fund to expand significantly to the following awards: Cindi Stoller Polek Achievement Scholarship for tuition or a portion and may include additional expenses; Cindi Stoller Polek/Ernest R. Matejaitis Clinical Internship Scholarship shall be for expenses or a portion incurred to pursue and complete a required clinical internship; Cindi Stoller Polek/James A. Gould Thesis Scholarship shall be for expenses or a portion necessary to support and complete a required thesis; and a Ernest R. Matejaitis Illinois Scholar in Physical Therapy to a student from the State of Illinois.

- must have experience in a physical therapy department with patient interaction and evidence of community service involvement; candidates are evaluated on three priorities designated in this order: attitude/character, financial need, and scholastic ability. Basically looking for an individual who views physical therapy as a "calling," not a job.

Rada Aquatic Science Scholarship
Established to recognize academic excellence in the field of aquatic science at UW-L.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in biology and/or microbiology with an emphasis in aquatic science

- financial need should be considered
Recreation Major's Club Scholarship
The fund's purpose shall be the general support of student awards in the department of recreation management and therapeutic recreation at UW-L.
Criteria:
- recipient must have at least 60+ credits to be enrolled full time with a major in recreation management or therapeutic recreation for at least two semesters
- good academic standing
- active member of the recreation majors club during year in which award presented
- no individual may receive the award more than once
- no more than three of the award recipients may be Recreation Club officers in that given year
- special application required and available from the Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation Department
Friends of Hans and Ella Reuter Scholarship
Established in 1978 by the family and friends of Hans and Ella Reuter to recognize their outstanding commitment and leadership to the university community.

Coulee Rock Club Scholarship Fund
The Coulee Rock Club was established over 20 years ago to study earth science such as geology and to spread this knowledge.

Romenesko Family Scholarship Fund in Chemistry
Established by the Romenesko family to support scholarships in the Chemistry Department. Dave Romenesko is a 1971 UW-L graduate and his daughter, Adrienne, is a 1998 UW-L graduate.
Criteria:
- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in chemistry (with an interest in polymer chemistry preferred)
- at least a 3.25 gpa in both chemistry and cumulative gpa
- financial need should be considered
- must be a Wisconsin resident and US citizen
- special application available from the chemistry department
Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science
Thomas Rosandich is a 1954 UW-L graduate who was inducted in UW-L's Athletic Wall of Fame in 1983 and received the Maurice O. Graff Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1989. Dr. Rosandich is founder and president of the United States Sports Academy and founder of Olympia Sport Village for training Olympic athletes
Criteria:
- Recipient must be a graduating senior that is finishing in May, August or December of current class year from the Department of Exercise and Sport Science who may have also competed in Intercollegiate Sport at UW-La Crosse.
- Academic excellence (overall 3.5 GPA or above) and demonstrated leadership in campus and/or community activities
- Financial need shall not be a consideration
- Two current letters of recommendation are required that specifically address the scholarship criteria
New Orleans Saints James E. Finks Memorial Scholarship for Leadership in Sports Management
To provide scholarships to qualified students who have demonstrated leadership and ability in programs that train and support personnel in sports management area.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in exercise & sport science with emphasis in sports management
- above average academically
- demonstrate strong leadership abilities by participating in recognized campus extracurricular activities
Leo & Gertrude Schnur Scholarship--Mathematics
Established by members of the mathematics department to honor Leo, a former department member, awarded to a mathematics major.
Criteria:
- senior to be enrolled full time with a major in mathematics
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- financial need may be considered as a tie breaker
- strong desire to become and remain a mathematics teacher
Grace M. Smith Clinical Laboratory Science Scholarship Fund
Established by colleagues and alumni to honor Grace Smith who was the director of the Medical Technology Program from 1974 to 1996 when she retired.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in clinical laboratory science
- at least a 3.25 gpa
- must have been admitted into the clinical laboratory science program
Lillian Smith Scholarship Fund in Physical Therapy
This scholarship was established by James Gould, PT faculty, to honor Lillian Smith for her 20 years of dedication and loyalty to the UW-L physical therapy program (1974-1994) as the department secretary.
Criteria:
- graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in physical therapy
- above average grade point average
- financial need should be considered
- must be in the last year of the program with the award to be given to assist with student internships
George M. Snodgrass Scholarship
Created by various college organizations and faculty in memory of former President Snodgrass.
Criteria:
- senior to be enrolled full time preparing for teaching
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- all credits taken at UW-L and planning to receive his/her degree the same year as the award
- awarded to a female in odd-numbered years and a male in even-numbered years
- based on leadership and scholarship preparing for teaching
- application should be submitted to 235 Morris Hall
"Doc" Steuck Special Project Award
Awarded to honor Dr. Robert Steuck who is a retired faculty from the Recreation Management & Therapeutic Recreation.
Criteria:
- awarded to a student who has served the recreation department, campus, and the La Crosse community; and has committed their leadership abilities for at least two major events
- at least a 2.7 gpa
- special application required and available from the Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation Department
Oliver A. Stoffer Scholarship
Established in accordance with the terms of the will of Mr. Stoffer, a former university employee.

- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics, or physics

John and Lois Storlie Scholarship Endowment Fund in Computer Science
Fund was named in honor of John Storlie for his support in the computer science department.

- must have completed at least 75 credits, 18 of which are computer science credits

Daniel Sutherland Memorial Scholarship Fund in Aquatic Science
Established by family and friends in memory of Daniel Sutherland who was on the faculty in the biology department since 1994. He was a talented and dedicated scientist and a passionate teacher.
Criteria:
- recipient must be enrolled full time as a graduate student with a major in Aquatic Science
- recipient must be in good academic standing with above average grade point average
- financial need may be considered
- first preference shall be students who were in Daniel Sutherland's classroom
Taylor Family Scholarship in Health Education/Physical Education and Elementary Education
Rollo Taylor, graduate of 1956, served the physical education department from 1965-1991. The fund was set up by the Taylor family to support these departments at UW-L.
Criteria:
- student to be enrolled full time with a major in health education/exercise & sport science (in even-numbered years) or elementary education (in odd-numbered years)
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- financial need should be considered
- have high teaching potential
- application should be submitted to 235 Morris Hall for odd numbered years and to 124 Mitchell Main Hall in even numbered years.
Arnold Temte Mathematics Honors Scholarship
Established to honor Arnold Temte, a former mathematics professor, for his more than 20 years as treasurer of UW-L Scholarships, Inc.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in mathematics
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- financial need not considered by only in a tie breaker
- completed at least three mathematics courses including math 208 and one upper level course; be enrolled in a major program in the department during the scholarship period
Anna Thomas Scholarship
Established by the Phi Chapter of Delta Psi Kappa, a national honorary fraternity in physical education to honor Anna Thomas, a former advisor of the organization.
Criteria:
- junior female to be enrolled full time planning to be a teacher in physical education
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- outstanding in both leadership and personality
- well established professional reputation
- shall display in her character traits of honesty, broad mindedness and a positive, uplifting approach
- should be recognized for achievement in the area of service
Thorman Family "Pay It Forward" Scholarship for Physical Therapy
Established by the Thorman family to support a scholarship for the physical therapy department. Michele Thorman is a lecturer in the physical therapy department.
Criteria:
The ideal candidate for this scholarship is a second year physical therapy student who* :
- is a determined, self-starter who demonstrates the ability to overcome adversity:
a. academic challenges: i.e. may have had to work exceptionally hard to obtain satisfactory grades or has made significant academic progress over the course of the program
b. personal challenges: i.e. may have had overcome health, personal or family related issues while still successfully meeting the demands of the PT Program
c. financial challenges: i.e. may be self supporting their education or has incurred significant financial hardship while in the PT Program
- is recognized by academic and clinical faculty as possessing strong character attributes including professional and personal humility, integrity and maturity.
- demonstrates strong professional behaviors with emphasis on personal and professional accountability, exceptional commitment to learning and respectful communication with peers, patients and faculty.
a. is a student member of the APTA
- is recognized by academic and clinical faculty as a selfless individual
a. has demonstrated the value for placing patients' needs first
b. has demonstrated the value for selfless service to their community and /or profession
- is in good academic standing (3.0 minimum).

Larry L. Trammell Microbiology Prep Room Scholarship
Established by the Microbiology Department at the time of Mr. Trammell's retirement from his position as the Laboratory Manager at UW-L.
Criteria:
- to be enrolled full time with a major in microbiology
- above average grade point average
- must have worked for at least one year in the Microbiology Prep Room
Raymond W. Tymeson Jr. Youth Sports Coaching Scholarship
Established in 1997 to recognize significant youth sports coaching contributions by a Physical Education Teaching major
Criteria:
- academically qualified as a senior at the time of the first scholarship payout to be enrolled full time in the Department of Health Education and Health Promotion; the Department of Exercise & Sport Science; or the Department of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation
- at least a 2.85 overall gpa
- financial need may be considered
- must demonstrate a record of significant youth sports (ages 5-15) coaching experience in at least two sports (or one with substantial time commitment and leadership) during the past two years
- along with the application, up-to-date resume and 2 current letters of recommendation (UW-L faculty and/or youth sports organization supervisors) directed specifically to this scholarship is required
E. William Vickroy Scholarship
Established in honor of E. William Vickroy who served as athletic director at UW-L from 1948 until his retirement in 1987.
Criteria:
- undergraduate student to be enrolled full time from exercise & sport science, health and recreation
- at least a 3.0 gpa
- preferably having primary emphasis in coaching and/or sports administration
A. Vincent and Janet B. Weber Scholarship in Biology
Dr. Weber is an emeritus faculty having served the University from 1956-1989 including 11 years in the biology department.
Criteria:
- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in biology (shall include students in education with a biology major) but not include any other majors such as microbiology
- minimum of 60 credits earned at UW-L including at least 12 credits completed in the biology major
- at least a 3.6 gpa
Wedro Scholarship
Established by Dr. Benjamin Wedro for students majoring in health, or health related field, or exercise & sport science at UW-L.
Criteria:
- one award given to a junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in health, a health related field or exersice & sport science
- at least a 3.3 gpa
- financial need may be considered
- committee shall consider an applicant's record of community volunteer service and involvement as well as an applicant's demonstrated fitness and sport
Emma Lou Wilder Scholarships I & II
Established in honor of Emma Lou Wilder, long-time physical education instructor.

- undergraduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in exercise & sport science
- at least a 3.5 gpa with high academic achievement
- must be pursing a physical education career

Established in honor of Emma Lou Wilder, long-time physical education instructor.

- sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time in exercise & sport science, health and recreation
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- financial need may be considered
- scholarship is renewable up to three years if at least a 3.5 gpa is maintained
Philip K. Wilson Scholarship
Established by Philip Wilson to recognize academic excellence in the adult fitness/cardiac rehab program at UW-L.
Criteria:
- graduate student enrolled full time with a major in the adult fitness/cardiac rehabilitation master degree program
- above average grade point average
- financial need should be considered
- no application required--selected by LEHP faculty
Walter M. Winfrey Memorial Scholarship in Microbiology
Established by family and friends of Walter Winfrey, father of Dr. Michael Winfrey, the chair of the Department of Microbiology at UW-L. Walter Winfrey, who died in 2984, attended college on the GI bill following World War II. He and his wife, Neva, attended college while caring for two children and this scholarship was established to recognize non-traditional students.

- junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in microbiology
- at least a 3.25 gpa
- preference given to non traditional students that have children while attending UW-L
