Esther Risberg and her family emigrated from Scandinavia and
settled in the Midwest. She attended La Crosse Normal School
and graduated in 1915 with a two-year English degree from the
School of Education. She married Herman O. West in 1920 and
they established their home in Pennsylvania and had three sons.
In 1923 the West Company was officially launched. Today it is
one of the nation's leading manufacturers of pharmaceutical
packaging components, disposable medical devices and packaging
components for cosmetics and beverage industries.
Purpose: This scholarship is to provide an opportunity
for a college education to a qualified high school student who
is without adequate means and may not otherwise consider attending
college. Although the earnings from the established endowment
could vary from year to year, the recipient should be advised
that the scholarship monies, when combined with other financial
aid awarded by the university, should be able to cover room,
board, and tuition costs.
Requirements for the scholarship:
1) The applicant must rank in the top 10% of high school
graduating class
2) submit the Financial Aid Form (FAFSA) to the University
of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Financial Aids Office, 1725 State Street,
La Crosse, WI 54601
3) three written recommendations from non-relatives including:
(a) an educator, (b) a civic leader, and (c) one of your own
choosing
4) describe in your own handwriting, in 300 words or
less, your educational plans and briefly describe your career
goals --what you hope to accomplish in life.
Procedures: Complete and sign this application and give it
to your high school guidance director. Ask the guidance director
to mail two copies of this application along with two copies
of your high school transcript to: UW-L Foundation Office, Scholarship
