COLLEGE OF LIBERAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIPS

All applications for these scholarships listed in this section should be submitted to 235 Morris Hall. No letters of recommendation required unless otherwise stated in scholarship criteria. Deadline: March 1.

James H. Mack Scholarship Fund for Public Policy Advocacy
Established by alum Jim Mack, class of ’57, to support students in a public policy career. Mr. Mack currently resides in Arlington, VA, and established this scholarship in 2008.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse with a major in political science, public administration or economics;
  2. recipient must be a junior or a senior;
  3. recipient must show interest in pursuing a career in the public policy arena in either the public or private sector;
  4. recipient must have reputation for integrity and good ethical behavior;
  5. recipient must have participated in the political process (e.g. public office, assisting others in attending public office, student government and/or campus association relevant to this award)
  6. with the application, recipient must submit an essay on a domestic public policy issue (of the recipient’s choice) demonstrating knowledge of the issue and promoting arguments in support as well as opposition to the issue in addition to stating personal point of view on the issue and why

Carolyn G. Berg Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by family and friends in Carolyn's memory to support music education and political science/public administration.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore or junior to be enrolled full time with a major in music education or political science
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. first preference given to a student with a Bangor, Wisconsin, address
  5. if there are none qualified, next preference shall be given to a student who has a permanent address located within a 100 mile radius of La Crosse

Frederick & Kathryn Davies Scholarship
Established by Dr. Fred Davies who taught at UW-L for 29 years. He wanted the scholarship to act as an inspiration to excellent students in history and to continue their degree at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time with a major in history
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa

Tamzin Aldrich Esposito Memorial Scholarship
Established in loving memory by the family and friends of Tamzin Aldrich Esposito. Tamzin graduated from UW-L with a B.A. degree in 1963 with a major in foreign language. She died in a boating accident in Puerto Rico in 1985.
Criteria:

  1. junior (completed four semesters) to be enrolled full time with a major in Spanish
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need must be demonstrated

Harry W. Gardiner Endowment Fund in International Education
Harry Gardiner, emeriti faculty from 1974-1999 in the psychology department established this scholarship to recognize academic achievement by psychology majors participating in study abroad programs through the International Education program.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in psychology and participating in study abroad programs through the International Education Program
  2. above average gpa
  3. psychology applicants with the two highest overall GPAs shall be the preferred recipients for these awards
  4. one award in the fall semester and one award in the spring semester

Scholarship for Excellence in the Study of German
Established to recognize academic excellence in the study of German at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a German major or minor
  2. at least 3.5 in German and at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa
  3. preference given to students preparing to teach at the elementary or secondary level
  4. good character

Maurice and Elizabeth Graff Scholarships -- Political Science and/or Public Administration
Established by Dr. Maurice O. Graff who served UW-L as an instructor, student personnel officer, dean of the college, vice president, and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in political science/public administration
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. must plan to continue school and graduate at UW-L

Maurice and Elizabeth Graff Scholarships -- Sociology and/or Archaeological Studies
Established by Dr. Maurice O. Graff who served UW-L as an instructor, student personnel officer, dean of the college, vice president, and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in sociology and/or archaeological studies
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. must plan to continue school and graduate at UW-L

Donna Hansen Memorial Scholarship in English
Established by parents of Donna Hansen in memory of the former Waupaca High School graduate and UW-L student.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time with a major or minor in English
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. involved in extracurricular activities on campus and individual leadership qualities

Donna Hansen Memorial Scholarship in Psychology

Thomas Harris Scholarship in Psychology
Established in loving memory of Tom Harris by his family and friends. Tom served the department of psychology at UW-L for several years.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time with a major in psychology
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. based on academic merit and financial need

Mary H. Hebberd Endowment Fund for English
Mary Hebberd retired in 1976 as Associate Professor of English at UW-L. She was a member of the faculty since 1947 and in addition to teaching was the first director of public relations and alumni affairs and a member of the board of the UW-L Foundation.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full or part time with a major in English
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered

Joseph P. Heim Graduate Scholarship Fund
Established by friends of Joe Heim for his outstanding guidance and commitment to the pursuit of student excellence in political science and public administration where he is currently on faculty.
Criteria:

  1. graduating senior with a major in political science or public administration planning on attending graduate school
  2. above average gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. committee is to weigh three areas of criteria for this award: (a) academic performance, (b) community involvement, and (c) political involvement
  5. award is to fund graduate studies for recipients in the areas of political science, public administration or law

Alan C. Howe Memorial Scholarship Fund in Sociology and Psychology
The Howe Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Alan Howe who served the administrative computing services office. This special fund was amended to benefit students majoring in sociology and psychology.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student with preference given to non-traditional student to be enrolled full time with a major in sociology or psychology
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered but only as a tie-breaker
  4. preference will be given to potential recipients who have a demonstrated interest in family/alcohol rehabilitation or, in the alternative, whose career plans focus on working in the area of human services
  5. each year one award shall be given to a major in sociology and one award shall be given to a major in psychology

William J. Hyde English Department Scholarship Fund
Established and awarded annually by members of the English department faculty. Fund was renamed to honor Dr. Hyde's substantial contribution to the fund and express their admiration for his distinguished career as a teacher at UW-L. Dr. Hyde was at UW-L for 36 years.
Criteria:

  1. attended UW-L for at least 30 credits and must have completed at least 60 credits but no more than 110 credits at the time of the announcement of the award and shall not have completed more than 120 credits at the time of award to be enrolled full time with an English major
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. exhibit fluency in the American-English language both oral and written forms, to demonstrate the ability to interpret and appreciate literary texts, and exhibit manifest knowledge of English and/or American literature commensurate with the academic level attained by the student at the time of the award.
  5. completed at least two upper division English courses (300-400 level) at the time of award

Albert H. and Helen Kent Scholarship
Established for the general support of the English program by providing monies for a variety of activities such as student scholarships, special projects, dignitary visitations, or other functions that the selection committee deems appropriate to enhance the program.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time with a major in English
  2. based on scholarship, leadership and demonstrate outstanding potential as an English major
  3. entering freshman required to send a letter of recommendation from an English teacher

William Laux Memorial Fund
Established in honor of William, a former history professor and dean of the College of Arts, Letters & Sciences.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in history
  2. good academic standing

Dr. Richard Lindblad Political Science Award
Established in 1984 for the general support of the political science department by providing monies for scholarships and other functions which the selection committee deems appropriate for the enhancement of the department's objectives.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate to be enrolled full time with a declared major or minor in political science or public administration
  2. above average grade point average
  3. demonstrated leadership potential and involvement in both campus and community activities

John E. Magerus Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior from the College of Liberal Studies
Established by colleaques and friends to honor Dr. Magerus at his retirement. He came to UW-L as a lecturer in French in 1976 and 28 years later retired as Dean of the College of Liberal Studies.

  2. no application--students are nominated by faculty

Thomas Baird McIlraith Scholarship in English
Established by Lorraine and Stuart McIlraith to support student scholarships in English at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate to be enrolled full time with a major in English
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa

David Lee Miller Scholarship for Creativity in Philosophy
Established as a tribute to Dr. Miller, a philosophy faculty member, to support the philosophy majors based on creativity, achievement and need.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in philosophy
  2. good academic standing
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. demonstrate to the Committee creativity in philosophy

Ruth A. Nixon-Davy Scholarship in Spanish
Created by Sigma Delta Pi Fraternity honoring Ruth Nixon-Davy, professor emeritus of the foreign language department. Dr. Nixon served the UW-L campus from 1945-84.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time with a major in Spanish
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. outstanding achievement and proficiency in Spanish

Jay C. Norris Scholarship
Established through a bequest from the late Jay Norris, a respected member of the university's English department.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing students to be enrolled full time with a major in English
  2. above average grade point average
  3. two letters of recommendation required from teachers
  4. final candidates may be asked to submit a writing sample

Marilyn Ondell Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by Marilyn Ondell, '69 graduate' to support graduate of parent self-sufficiency program or women's studies.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. either a graduate of the parent self-sufficiency program or a student who has successfully completed at least one course in women's studies or is currently enrolled in the women's studies department
  3. good academic standing
  4. financial need should be demonstrated
  5. a single parent

Psychology Alumni Scholarship Fund
Established by the psychology department to support psychology students.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled with a major in psychology
  2. at least a 2.5 gpa in psychology
  3. preference should be given for student applicants actively involved in psychology related extracurricular activities (clubs, volunteer work, internships, etc.)

Leo & Gertrude Schnur Scholarships—English
Established by members of the mathematics department to honor Leo, a former department member, awarded to a mathematics major. Gertrude's name was added to the fund by Leo in 1987 and includes an award to an English major.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time with a major in English
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered only in a tie breaker
  4. strong desire to become and remain an English teacher

Dr. Raymond Schoen Memorial Scholarship in English
This scholarship will be awarded for the 2008-09 academic year. Raymond Schoen was a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 1978 until 2005. The recipient must meet the following criteria: Recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse with the following in order of priority:

  1. Recipient must have a major in English
  2. Recipient must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.25 grade point average
  3. Recipient may be a junior or senior
  4. Financial need shall be considered

Joyce Christiansen Telzrow Memorial Scholarship
Established as a memorial to a former foreign language instructor.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior woman to be enrolled full time with a major in a foreign language, English, history, sociology, anthropology or art
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa

Toward Self Reliance Scholarship
Established to provide financial assistance to non-traditional students seeking a women's studies certificate at UW-L.
Criteria

  1. open to only a female with preference given, but not restricted to non-traditional (non-traditional defined as 25 years or older), non-degree, special or graduate seeking women's studies
  2. full time status not required
  3. must have completed 9 credits of the 15 required to certify in women's studies
  4. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the Foundation Office (go to http://foundation.uwlax.edu/schselfapp.html)

Julie Zabolio Scholarship
Established by friends and faculty in memory of Julie Zabolio, a former student in foreign language.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major or minor in French
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
