COLLEGE OF LIBERAL STUDIES SCHOLARSHIPS
All applications for these scholarships listed in this section should
be submitted to 235 Morris Hall. No letters of recommendation required
unless otherwise stated in scholarship criteria. Deadline: March 1.
James H. Mack Scholarship Fund for Public Policy Advocacy
Established by alum Jim Mack, class of ’57, to support students in a public policy career. Mr. Mack currently resides in Arlington, VA, and established this scholarship in 2008.
Criteria:
- recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse with a major in political science, public administration or economics;
- recipient must be a junior or a senior;
- recipient must show interest in pursuing a career in the public policy arena in either the public or private sector;
- recipient must have reputation for integrity and good ethical behavior;
- recipient must have participated in the political process (e.g. public office, assisting others in attending public office, student government and/or campus association relevant to this award)
- with the application, recipient must submit an essay on a domestic public policy issue (of the recipient’s choice) demonstrating knowledge of the issue and promoting arguments in support as well as opposition to the issue in addition to stating personal point of view on the issue and why
Carolyn
G. Berg Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by family and friends in Carolyn's memory to support music
education and political science/public administration.
Criteria:
- sophomore
or junior to be enrolled full time with a major in music education
or political science
- above
average grade point average
- financial
need should be considered
- first
preference given to a student with a Bangor, Wisconsin, address
- if there
are none qualified, next preference shall be given to a student who
has a permanent address located within a 100 mile radius of La Crosse
Frederick
& Kathryn Davies Scholarship
Established by Dr. Fred Davies who taught at UW-L for 29 years. He wanted
the scholarship to act as an inspiration to excellent students in history
and to continue their degree at UW-L.
Criteria:

Tamzin
Aldrich Esposito Memorial Scholarship
Established in loving memory by the family and friends of Tamzin Aldrich
Esposito. Tamzin graduated from UW-L with a B.A. degree in 1963 with
a major in foreign language. She died in a boating accident in Puerto
Rico in 1985.
Criteria:

Harry
W. Gardiner Endowment Fund in International Education
Harry Gardiner, emeriti faculty from 1974-1999 in the psychology department
established this scholarship to recognize academic achievement by psychology
majors participating in study abroad programs through the International
Education program.
Criteria:

junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in psychology
and participating in study abroad programs through the International
Education Program

applicants with the two highest overall GPAs shall be the preferred
recipients for these awards

Scholarship
for Excellence in the Study of German
Established to recognize academic excellence in the study of German
at UW-L.
Criteria:

3.5 in German and at least a 3.0 cumulative gpa

given to students preparing to teach at the elementary or secondary
level

Maurice
and Elizabeth Graff Scholarships -- Political Science and/or Public
Administration
Established by Dr. Maurice O. Graff who served UW-L as an instructor,
student personnel officer, dean of the college, vice president, and
vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Criteria:
- sophomore,
junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in political
science/public administration
- at least
a 3.0 gpa
- must
plan to continue school and graduate at UW-L
Maurice
and Elizabeth Graff Scholarships -- Sociology and/or Archaeological
Studies
Established by Dr. Maurice O. Graff who served UW-L as an instructor,

Hansen Memorial Scholarship in English
Established by parents of Donna Hansen in memory of the former Waupaca
High School graduate and UW-L student.

Mary
H. Hebberd Endowment Fund for English
Mary Hebberd retired in 1976 as Associate Professor of English at UW-L.
She was a member of the faculty since 1947 and in addition to teaching
was the first director of public relations and alumni affairs and a
member of the board of the UW-L Foundation.
Criteria:

Joseph
P. Heim Graduate Scholarship Fund
Established by friends of Joe Heim for his outstanding guidance and
commitment to the pursuit of student excellence in political science
and public administration where he is currently on faculty.
Criteria:

senior with a major in political science or public administration
planning on attending graduate school

average gpa

need may be considered

is to weigh three areas of criteria for this award: (a) academic performance,
(b) community involvement, and (c) political involvement

Alan
C. Howe Memorial Scholarship Fund in Sociology and Psychology
The Howe Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Alan Howe
who served the administrative computing services office. This special
fund was amended to benefit students majoring in sociology and psychology.
Criteria:
- sophomore,
junior, senior or graduate student with preference given to non-traditional
student to be enrolled full time with a major in sociology or psychology
- at least
a 3.0 gpa
- financial
need may be considered but only as a tie-breaker
- preference
will be given to potential recipients who have a demonstrated interest
in family/alcohol rehabilitation or, in the alternative, whose career
plans focus on working in the area of human services
- each
year one award shall be given to a major in sociology and one award
shall be given to a major in psychology
William
J. Hyde English Department Scholarship Fund
Established and awarded annually by members of the English department
faculty. Fund was renamed to honor Dr. Hyde's substantial contribution
to the fund and express their admiration for his distinguished career
as a teacher at UW-L. Dr. Hyde was at UW-L for 36 years.
Criteria:

UW-L for at least 30 credits and must have completed at least 60 credits
but no more than 110 credits at the time of the announcement of the
award and shall not have completed more than 120 credits at the time
of award to be enrolled full time with an English major

a 3.5 gpa

fluency in the American-English language both oral and written forms,
to demonstrate the ability to interpret and appreciate literary texts,
and exhibit manifest knowledge of English and/or American literature
commensurate with the academic level attained by the student at the
time of the award.

Albert
H. and Helen Kent Scholarship
Established for the general support of the English program by providing
monies for a variety of activities such as student scholarships, special
projects, dignitary visitations, or other functions that the selection
committee deems appropriate to enhance the program.

on scholarship, leadership and demonstrate outstanding potential as
an English major

freshman required to send a letter of recommendation from an English

Laux Memorial Fund
Established in honor of William, a former history professor and dean
of the College of Arts, Letters & Sciences.
Criteria:

sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full
time with a major in history

Dr.
Richard Lindblad Political Science Award
Established in 1984 for the general support of the political science
department by providing monies for scholarships and other functions
which the selection committee deems appropriate for the enhancement
of the department's objectives.

leadership potential and involvement in both campus and community

John
E. Magerus Award for the Outstanding Graduating Senior from the College
of Liberal Studies
Established by colleaques and friends to honor Dr. Magerus at his retirement.
He came to UW-L as a lecturer in French in 1976 and 28 years later retired
as Dean of the College of Liberal Studies.

Established by Lorraine and Stuart McIlraith to support student scholarships

Lee Miller Scholarship for Creativity in Philosophy
Established as a tribute to Dr. Miller, a philosophy faculty member,
to support the philosophy majors based on creativity, achievement and

Ruth
A. Nixon-Davy Scholarship in Spanish
Created by Sigma Delta Pi Fraternity honoring Ruth Nixon-Davy, professor
emeritus of the foreign language department. Dr. Nixon served the UW-L
campus from 1945-84.
Criteria:

Jay
C. Norris Scholarship
Established through a bequest from the late Jay Norris, a respected
member of the university's English department.

Marilyn
Ondell Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by Marilyn Ondell, '69 graduate' to support graduate of
parent self-sufficiency program or women's studies.

a graduate of the parent self-sufficiency program or a student who
has successfully completed at least one course in women's studies
or is currently enrolled in the women's studies department

Psychology
Alumni Scholarship Fund
Established by the psychology department to support psychology students.
Criteria:

or senior to be enrolled with a major in psychology
- at least
a 2.5 gpa in psychology

should be given for student applicants actively involved in psychology
related extracurricular activities (clubs, volunteer work, internships,
etc.)
Leo
& Gertrude Schnur ScholarshipsEnglish
Established by members of the mathematics department to honor Leo, a
former department member, awarded to a mathematics major. Gertrude's
name was added to the fund by Leo in 1987 and includes an award to an
English major.
Criteria:

to be enrolled full time with a major in English
- at least a 3.5 gpa
- financial
need may be considered only in a tie breaker
- strong
desire to become and remain an English teacher
Dr. Raymond Schoen Memorial Scholarship in English
This scholarship will be awarded for the 2008-09 academic year. Raymond Schoen was a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 1978 until 2005. The recipient must meet the following criteria: Recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse with the following in order of priority:
- Recipient must have a major in English
- Recipient must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.25 grade point average
- Recipient may be a junior or senior
- Financial need shall be considered

Established as a memorial to a former foreign language instructor.
