UNIVERSITY GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS
'Other' scholarships (below)

No letters of recommendation are required unless otherwise stated in scholarship criteria. All applications should be submitted to the Foundation Office in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. The University General Scholarships also lists scholarships where the major may overlap in two colleges.

UW-L Alumni Association Scholarship
Provided by the board of directors of the UW-La Crosse Alumni Association.
Criteria:

  1. two awards given: one award to a sophomore, junior or senior and one award to a graduate student to be enrolled full time
  2. UW-L alum or child or grandchild of an alum, who has demonstrated scholarship, leadership, personality and character as well as involvement in extracurricular activities
  3. must not exceed 12 transfer credits for consideration
  4. at least a 3.0 gpa
  5. recipient to be selected in consultation with the Alumni Association

Rena Angell and Alpha Omicron Pi Scholarships
These two scholarships, formerly offered as sorority scholarships with similar criteria, are combined to make a more meaningful award.
Criteria:

  1. female senior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa based on scholastic and personal qualities
  3. have completed first three years of training at UW-L and planning to receive degree within the next year

American Association of University Women Scholarship
Established by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to recognize academic excellence.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. GPA requirement of 3.0
  3. Must submit with application:(1) a typed biographical essay including a list of goals and (2) a letter of reference from a faculty advisor or teacher

AVANT Scholarship
Established to foster the professional growth and development of women. The award will fund a scholarship or an internship.
Criteria:

  1. female, 25 years of age or older, enrolled as a junior, senior or graduate student at UW-La Crosse or Viterbo University seeking a bachelor's or master's degree or enrolled as a first year student in an associate's degree program at WTC must be enrolled for a minimum of eight credits at the time the application is submitted
  2. applicant must be available to meet with the AVANT committee to discuss her career plans and her reasons for applying for the award
  3. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the Foundation Office  

UW-L Alumni Band Scholarship Fund in Memory of Dr. John L. Alexander
Established for the purpose of providing financial support for a dedicated member of the UW-L marching band.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-L
  2. recipient must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 grade point average
  3. recipient may be a sophomore, junior or senior current member of the marching band and should have at least one year served in the marching band

Douglas J. Baker Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund
Established in 1995 by family and friends in Doug's name that good memories and good works go forward with his name. Doug attended UW-L at the time of his death and through this fund students interested in fitness and sport may benefit from a scholarship in his name.
Criteria:

1.   shall be a sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
2.   good academic standing
3.   financial need should be considered
4.   interested in fitness and sport

Beta Sigma Chi Jack Burke and Bill Ogilvie Scholarship
An established family relationship to an individual who was a member of Beta Sigma Chi during the period of the organization's existence on the La Crosse campus (1934-1969) shall be a consideration in the award of the scholarship.  
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. first preference to an individual with a family relationship to the Betas--family relationship to an individual who was a member of Beta Sigma Chi while a student at La Crosse shall be interpreted as a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter or any other direct descendant of such a member
  4. demonstrated leadership skills through scholarship and participation in university approved student activities
  5. financial need shall be considered taking into the personal effort to contribute to his or her expenses while enrolled in the university
  6. scholarship shall not be awarded more than once to any one individual

Dr. Merton V. Campbell Endowment Fund
Dr. Campbell, a '39 graduate and a generous supporter of UW-L, has been involved in education for 40 years as superintendent of schools. He established this fund in 1995 for students involved in the campus and/or community activities and services.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major or minor in history, social science (economics, geography, political science, secondary broadfield social studies or sociology), mathematics, chemistry or physics
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need considered only as a tie breaker
  4. involvement in campus and/or community activities and services

Campus Dames Award
Established by the Campus Dames Organization of La Crosse.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore status at the time of application and who will have junior status the following fall semester to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. must have earned a minimum of 50% of credits at UW-L
  4. financial need may be a factor

Campus Dames Muriel Mitchell Award
Established by the Campus Dames in honor of Muriel Mitchell.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. 3.0 gpa   to 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. two letters of recommendation required from faculty members

Douglas Carnes Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by Clark Carnes to honor his late son, Doug, who was a 1972 UW-L graduate.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. involved in and performing outstanding work for WLSU, the University radio station

Scott Carnes Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by Clark Carnes to honor his late son, Scott, whose interests were physics and anthropology.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in physics or archaeology
  2. good academic standing

Margaret S. Chew Scholarship
Presented in the name of Margaret Chew by her fellow faculty members. Dr. Chew was a faculty member in the geography department at UW-L for 34 years.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. campus participation, positive influence on peers and dedicated to chosen profession to be considered

Commitment to Diversity Award
No more than two individual student awards will be presented at the Scholarship Reception held at 5 p.m. the last Monday in April in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The two awards are (1) UW-L student leader most committed to diversity (under 60 credits) and (2) UW-L student leader most committed to diversity (60 or more credits). The scholarship is sponsored by the Diversity Organizations Coalition. Any questions may be directed to Thomas Harris, Office of Multicultural Student Services.

Nomination deadline & guidelines:
Deadline: March 1 at 4 p.m. Submit typed nominations to the Foundation Office in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Nominations will be accepted for UW-L undergraduate students. Nominations are encouraged by anyone, including self-nominations. Nomination guidelines are limited to no more than three typed pages using 12 point Times New Roman font without photos and graphics to be signed, dated, number of credits earned by March 1 and delivered in a sealed envelope. Set margins as you wish. Content of nomination accomplishments are restricted to those between March 1 and the end of February that given year. Note: Late and handwritten nominations will not be reviewed.
Content criteria possibilities for nominations:

  1. Explain the top three reasons that your nomination deserves the appropriate award recognition;
  2. Share diversity related contributions that improved the quality of life for all.   This might include any innovations, interventions, generated resources, expansions, etc. that resulted in positive change;
  3. Describe impact of diversity and multicultural programs and events implemented and facilitated;
  4. Highlight diversity initiatives and proactive efforts to improve the campus climate;
  5. Reflect upon the teaching about diversity inside and outside of the classroom;
  6. Demonstrate positive impact and outcomes;
  7. Show affects in the UW-L community, on-campus and in the La Crosse and neighboring communities;
  8. Describe the spectrum of populations impacted and respective effects

Other positive attributes that might relate to the content criteria:

Community Credit Union
Community Credit Union has established a scholarship program offered to members for one incoming freshman and one non-traditional student.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student full or part time attending an accredited university/college/technical college of their choice
  2. member of Community Credit Union (graduating high school senior must be a YALE Club member)
  3. special application required and available from the Community Credit Union or the Foundation Office

Richard Corner
Established by Richard and Marjorie Corner to recognize academic excellence.
Criteria:

  1. freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. preference given to students from the Cedarburg area
  3. financial need may be considered

Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established for students majoring in marketing, management, community health education or school health education.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in marketing, management, community health education or school health education
  2. above average gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. selection shall come down to a field of fully and equally qualified candidates, then preference should be given to a candidate who has a demonstrated interest in the cranberry industry in Wisconsin

Louis & Ida Ebin Scholarship

Criteria:

Established by Louis Ebin in 1979 in memory of his wife. The scholarship is presented to recognize and support exceptional scholars at UW-L.

 

  1. sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time at UW-L who plans to continue his/her education at UW-L
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. scholarship is renewable up to three years if at least a 3.75 gpa is maintained

John & Ellie Ellison Scholarship
Established by John Ellison for an entering freshman or continuing student from Blair High School, WI, who enrolls at UW-L or to a teaching faculty member within the Blair-Taylor School District for at least two years.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior who has graduated from Blair High school to be enrolled full time
  2. also an award is given to a teaching faculty from Blair-Taylor

The Equitable Life Foundation/ Chancellor's Minority Fund
This scholarship was funded by The Equitable Life Foundation to help minority students to attend UW-L. Minority is defined as a domestic multicultural student.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior minority to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing
  3. financial need may be considered

Eta Phi Alpha Scholarship
The Eta Phi Alpha scholarship is funded by the honor society and is awarded to a next year's senior student with highest academic achievement.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. based on high academic achievement

UW-L Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Presented by current members of the UW-L faculty, emeriti faculty and academic staff.
Criteria:

  1. must have completed at least 30 credits at UW-L to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. demonstrated scholarship and contributions to cultural life on campus

Jean L. Foss & Norene A. Smith Organization for Campus Women (OCW) Scholarship
Established by the OCW in 1985 to assist non-traditional women students.
Criteria:

  1. female, 25 years or older and enrolled or accepted for admission at UW-L
  2. no specific number of credits or GPA is stipulated
  3. financial need will be considered as a factor; if spouse or family refuse to support higher education for the applicant, only her income will be considered

Foundation Chairmen's Leadership Scholarship


Established the UW-L Foundation Board to honor past Foundation Chairmen who served the Foundation Board.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 2.75 gpa
  3. financial need can be considered
  4. demonstrate leadership potential and experience through academic as well as non-academic activities
NO AWARD 2009-10

Floyd and Orvilla Gautsch Endowment Fund
Established by family and friends to support student scholarships. Gautsch participated in football, track and swimming while a student at UW-L. He began his 30 year coaching in 1939 serving as head coach in track, cross country and basketball and as assistant football coach.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.3 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered only in a tie breaker
  4. renewable up to three years if at least a 3.3 gpa is maintained

Ray George Scholarship
Created by the friends of Ray George and gives preference to men and women participating in Greek organizations.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. member of a fraternal organization at UW-L (preference to Greek organizations)

Norman L. Gillette, Sr., Family Fund Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Norman Gillette who was a successful entrepreneur and businessman as Chairman of the Board of Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co of La Crosse, Rochester, Decorah, Iowa and Mankato, Minnesota. Mr. Gillette was an outstanding community activist and philanthropist who gave generously of his time, talent and treasure to the community.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time at UW-L
  2. from the La Crosse area
  3. list on the application connection to Pepsi
  4. above grade point average

Glendenning Family Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
Established by the Glendenning family for the purpose of scholarships for student football coaches at UW-L.
Criteria:

1. must be a student football coach who is no longer eligible to play football nor intends to play football
2. must be enrolled full time with above average grade point average
3. may be an undergraduate or graduate
4. financial need may be considered

Gund Family Scholarship
Established by the Gund family which is an old established family in La Crosse to support students at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate or graduate returning student (25 years of age or older)
  2. must be a parttime student (less than 9 credits for an undergraduate or less than 6 credits for a graduate student)
  3. at least a 3.5 gpa
  4. financial need may be considered
  5. scholarship is renewable up to three years if at least a 3.5 gpa is maintained and attending parttime

Donna Hansen Memorial Scholarship for Students from Waupaca High School
Established by the parents of Donna Hansen in memory of the former Waupaca High School graduate and UW-L student.
Criteria:

  1. completing his/her junior year at any accredited four-year institution of higher education with a declared major
  2. graduate of Waupaca High School
  3. at least a 3.0 gpa
  4. special application required and available at Waupaca High School

H.O.P.E. Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
Established by the Hmong Organization Promoting Education, an approved student organization at UW-L, to support Hmong students.
Criteria:

  1. must be a Hmong student with at least a 2.5 gpa
  2. one scholarship awarded to an incoming Hmong freshman and one scholarship awarded for a continuing Hmong student
  3. in addition to the regular application for incoming freshman and continuing students, an additional essay of 300 words or less will be required on the topic posted at the H.O.P.E. Web site at: http:www.uwlax.edu/hope Also, for entering freshman, application must include two letters of recommendation from an employer, high school teacher or high school counselor.

Robert Jed Huff Memorial Scholarship
Established by William and Marilyn Huff Nieckarz. Fund is established in memory of Marilyn's son, who attended UW-La Crosse.
Criteria:

  1. junior, senior or graduate non-traditional (25 years or older) student to be enrolled part or full time
  2. no specific major required but someone pursuing the environmental studies minor would be preferred
  3. should enjoy wide and diverse life experiences and a diversity of people and societies
  4. good academic standing
  5. financial need should be considered

James Parker Scholarship
Established by faculty emeritus Jim Parker to support multicultural students at UW-L.
Recipient must meet the following criteria:

  1. Recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse being a student of color defined as Afro-American, Hispanic America, Native American or Asian American;
  2. Recipient must be in good academic standing;
  3. Recipient must have completed at least three full academic semesters at time of application;
  4. Recipient must have demonstrated during their career at UW-L academic/political awakening to his/her “situation” and self-awareness;
  5. Recipient must submit along with the application a written essay on self/goals/sense of connection to others and community.

Rudy Koch Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Natural Sciences and Environmental Education
Rudy Koch was a professor in the biology department for 16 years. He had doctorates in both Plant Biology and Science Education and taught through the Science Education Center.
Criteria:

  1. graduate level student with preference given to current school teachers
  2. engaged in studies in the natural sciences or environmental education
  3. at least a 2.5 gpa
  4. financial need shall be considered

Judith L. Kuipers Endowment Fund
Established by the UW-L Foundation in honor of Judith Kuipers at the time of her resignation of the Chancellor of UW-L, for student scholarships in symphony orchestra, international studies or diversity at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. for students in symphony orchestra, international studies or diversity
  3. above average gpa
  4. financial need should be considered

La Crosse Community Foundation Scholarship
Awarded by the La Crosse Community Foundation to qualified recipient.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time from the Greater La Crosse area
  2. outstanding leadership, scholarship and personality

Marine Credit Union Scholarship (formerly Advantage Credit Union)
Established by the credit union for members of the credit union and their families.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. members of Marine Credit Union and their families
  3. special application available from the Marine Credit Union and returned to them

Stuart Morton McIlraith Scholarship II
Established by Stuart and Lorraine McIlraith to recognize scholastic achievement in a continuing student at UW-L
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time pursuing any major or course of study
  2. should have completed at least two biology courses or enroll for at least two biology courses during the year of the award
  3. demonstrate a strong academic background by taking a variety of courses through basic studies
  4. at least a 3.0 gpa
  5. two letters of recommendation from faculty are required

Lloyd Meiners Fund in International Education
The fund shall be used exclusively to support students engaged in international educational exchange.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate or graduate to be enrolled full time participating in an international education program of the UW-L Office of International Education (including direct exchange programs, study abroad, degree study at UW-L by foreign nationals, etc.)
  2. significant academic achievement

John W. Metzger Delta Sigma Phi-Ei Endowment Fund
Established by friends and family in memory of John Metzger, a Delta Sigma Phi-Ei member.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. member of Delta Sigma Phi-EI
  3. good academic standing
  4. financial need should be considered

Rexford and Muriel Mitchell and Muriel Mitchell Carroll Award Fund
Established in honor of Rexford and Muriel Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell served as president of UW-L from 1939-1965.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. not less than 2.75 nor more than 3.49 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. two letters of recommendation from faculty members required

Thomas Allen Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by Robert Moore in memory of his son who was a 1981 UW-L graduate.
Criteria:

  1. must be a foreign student enrolled full time
  2. must be above average grade point average
  3. may be a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student
  4. financial need must be demonstrated

Murphy Awards for Academic Excellence
Created in 1980 through a grant from the Murphy Foundation, intended to reward achievement and serve as an incentive to higher attainment.
Criteria:

  1. graduating senior during or at the end of the academic year
  2. awarded to the university's two outstanding graduating scholars as determined by the selection committee
  3. no application required

Eugene W. Murphy Scholarship
Established by Eugene W. Murphy, a former UW System Regent.   Awarded alternately with the Marjorie Platz Murphy Scholarship.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior male to be enrolled full time
  2. all credits earned at UW-L
  3. at least a 3.5 gpa
  4. based on character, ability and scholarship
  5. awarded in odd-numbered years only

Marjorie Platz Murphy Scholarship
Established by Eugene W. Murphy, a former UW System Regent, and his wife Marjorie. Awarded alternately with the Eugene W. Murphy Scholarship.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior female to be enrolled full time
  2. all credits earned at UW-L
  3. at least a 3.5 gpa
  4. based on character, ability and scholarship
  5. awarded in even-numbered years only

George C. Nixon Award for UW-L Students Associated with the La Crosse Boys/Girls Club
Established in memory of George Nixon who was associated with the Boys/Girls Club of La Crosse for many years.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or currently enrolled undergraduate in any major to be enrolled full time
  2. current or past member of the La Crosse Boys/Girls Club
  3. have demonstrated leadership qualities
  4. special application required and available at the Boys/Girls Club

John and Julia Mettenrich Olson Scholarship Fund in the Alumni Honors Program
Julia, ’64, was inducted in the Graff Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be enrolled full time with preference given to a hard of hearing student
  2. major is open with above average grade point average
  3. recipient may be a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student
  4. scholarship is renewable if at least a 2.5 University gpa is maintained and the maximum number of years renewable is dependent on class:  freshman up to 4 years; sophomore up to 3 years; junior up to 2 years; senior up to 1 year; and graduate up to 2 years
     

Grace Olwell Memorial Endowment Fund
Established by a bequest from Grace Olwell to deserving students at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. renewable up to three years if a 3.75 gpa is maintained

P.E.O. Chapter AL Memorial Award Fund
P.E.O. is an organization dedicated to aiding women in financial need for an education.
Criteria:

  1. senior female to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 2.65 gpa  
  3. financial need should be considered

Alpha Xi Delta Melanie Pierce Fund
Established by family and friends in memory of Melanie who belonged to the Alpha Xi Delta sorority.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore to be enrolled full time at UW-L
  2. above average gpa
  3. if possible, should be pursuing a career involving children
  4. two letters of recommendation required: one from a faculty or staff and one of your choice

Viggo B. & Madeline C. Rasmusen Leadership Award in Physical Activities
Established in 1983 by Viggo Rasmusen who taught mathematics, physics and physical science at UW-L for 30 years.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing
  3. demonstrated leadership qualities as an individual in university and campus functions
  4. interest and participation in extracurricular activities

Riverland Energy Cooperative Scholarship The Riverland Energy Cooperative, with funds provided by the Federated Youth Foundation, has established a scholarship for a non-traditional student enrolled at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. returning to school after spending a minimum of 3 years in the work place or raising a family
  2. applicant or spouse must be a member of Riverland Energy Cooperative and a bona fide resident of the cooperative's service territory
  3. must be in good standing with Riverland Energy Cooperative
  4. must be enrolled with a minimum of 5 credits in a course of study leading to an associate or bachelor's degree
  5. good academic standing with at least a 2.0 gpa
  6. children of full time REC employees or directors of REC are not eligible
  7. one time award and not eligible for future awards
  8. special application required and available from the Foundation Office

Downtown Rotary Foundation Scholarship
This award is for area high school graduates funded by a grant from the Downtown Rotary Foundation. The duration will depend upon funding by the Downtown Rotary Foundation.
Criteria:

  1. accumulated at least 24 credits to be enrolled full time
  2. graduate of Central, Logan, Aquinas, Onalaska, Holmen, West Salem, Luther or La Crescent high schools
  3. at least a 2.75 gpa
  4. demonstrate financial need
  5. involved in campus service organizations and/or community activities

Autie Curry Sanford Award for Graduates of Rusk County Public Schools
Established by family and friends of Autie Curry Sanford for students from Rusk County attending UW-L. Mrs. Sanford was a 1912 UW-L graduate of the La Crosse Normal School and involved in education at Rusk County
Criteria:

  1. junior, senior or graduate student to be enrolled full time with any of the following:   major in art, major in biology with aquatic science concentration, major or minor in communication studies, major in education, major in English, minor in environmental studies, major in music or major in theatre arts
  2. high school graduate from the Rusk County (Wisconsin) Public Schools
  3. at least a 3.5 gpa
  4. financial need may be considered only as a tie breaker between two equally qualified students
  5. evidence of quality participation in extracurricular activities or volunteer work in the community should be considered

James R. Schipper Scholarship
Created in 1984 by Janet Schipper and other family members for the general support of non-traditional students through student scholarships, special projects, dignitary visitations, or other functions as determined by the selection committee.
Criteria:

  1. non-traditional student, 25 years or older, to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. must demonstrate financial need

G. Lester Steinhoff Scholarship
Established by Captain Steinhoff, a retired member of the UW-L academic staff, and his wife to perpetuate their interest and support of UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. outstanding UW-L student involved in his/her second or third year of ROTC
  2. based upon recommendation of the staff of the military science department

Donald and Helmer Strand Freshmen Scholarships
Established in memory of Donald Strand who served as a budget officer for many years and his father, Helmer, to recognize academic excellence at Blair High School and Central High School.
Criteria:

  1. freshman to be enrolled full time
  2. in odd-numbered years (2007-08) offered to a graduating senior from Blair High School
  3. in even-numbered years (2006-07) offered to a graduating senior from La Crosse Central High School with a major in exercise and sport science. Health and recreation majors may be considered if no qualified physical education student can be designated
  4. above average grade point
  5. demonstrate strong leadership abilities in extracurricular activities
  6. financial need should be considered
  7. scholarship will be paid in full the second semester
  8. in the event that there are no entering freshman that meet the criteria, continuing students graduating from Blair or Central High Schools may be considered as long as they meet the criteria

Student Alumni Ambassador Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
Established for funding scholarships for members of the Student Alumni Ambassadors at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-La Crosse;
  2. recipient must be in good academic standing with at least a 2.5 grade point average;
  3. recipient may be a sophomore, junior or senior. Freshmen and graduate students are not eligible;
  4. recipient must be a member of the Student Alumni Ambassadors for the full academic year in which the award is paid out.
  5. recipient must be working to help the Student Alumni Ambassadors fulfill their motto which is: Making connections between students and alumni in the pursuit of service and leadership.

Teamsters Brewery Workers/Local 695 Scholarship
Established to provide financial assistance to sons and daughters of Local 1081 members.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. student of a son, daughter or grandchild of a Local 1081 member or if the Local 1081 Union does not exist, any Wisconsin teamster union family member would be eligible
  3. at least a 2.5 gpa
  4. list the connection to the Teamsters, i.e., parent's name and address and the Union affiliate

Gordon Teigen Fund
Established by Gordon Teigen who served the campus for many years in the student center.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. member of the Bowling Sports Club
  3. at least a 2.75 gpa
  4. based on character, leadership and additional campus participation

Reuben Trane Scholarship
Established in memory of Reuben, a local businessman, by his wife.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time
  2. male recipient in odd-numbered years (2009-10); female in even-numbered years (2008-09)
  3. at least a 3.5 gpa  
  4. all credits earned at UW-L
  5. based on character, ability and scholarship

Myrtle Trowbridge Scholarships I & II
Established by a former history teacher, Myrtle Trowbridge, in memory of her father.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior male to be enrolled full time with a major in history (preference given), biological science, or in physical sciences, or English
  2. from a rural area (population less than 5,000)
  3. at least a 3.5 gpa
  4. high moral and ethical reputation

UW-L Scholarships, Inc. Scholarships
Established by the UW-L Scholarships, Inc.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate student to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. two letters of recommendation by faculty are required

Clark Van Galder Scholarship
Established by the family and friends of Coach Van Galder who served the campus from 1948-1952.
Criteria:

  1. continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. based on demonstrated leadership qualities in physical activities and personal qualities
  4. an academic interest in coaching is desirable

Robert C. Voight Scholarship
Established by Robert Voight who served as dean of the College of Arts, Letters & Sciences for several years.
Criteria:

  1. at least junior to be enrolled full time
  2. should have made a good contribution to the life of the liberal arts at UW-L by participation in programs and/or activities in art, music, drama, speech or publications
  3. at least a 3.0 gpa

Donald P. Weber Veterans Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2008 by Donald J. and Roxanne Weber of La Crosse, Wisconsin, in honor of Don's father, Donald P. Weber. Both Weber men are veterans of the Armed Forces with Donald P. serving in WWII and Donald J. in Vietnam. American Veterans have selflessly protected and defended us through the years. Without them, we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms we have today. This fund was established to support Wisconsin veterans who want to attend a UW System institution of higher learning. For 2010-11, there will be ten, $1,000 scholarships. Deadline to apply is May 15. Lieutenant Colonel Willard W. and Gladys E. Webb Scholarship in Military Science
Established by Gladys Webb and the UW-L Military Science Department in memory of Willard Webb who was a former Coulee Region businessman and serviceman from La Crosse. Lt. Colonel Webb enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1978. He attended many ROTC events in La Crosse.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled in military science course(s) at UW-L
  2. above average grade point average

Coulee Region White Cane Club
Established for the benefit of visually handicapped students on the UW-L campus.
Criteria:

  1. must be a visually handicapped student on the UW-L campus

W. H. White Scholarship
Established in the will of a former English teacher in honor of his father.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. based on scholarship, character and personality
  4. awarded in even-numbered years

Barbara & Carl Wimberly Scholarship Fund
Established by Friends of W. Carl Wimberly at his retirement in appreciation of his 39 years of dedicated service to this campus.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. based on academic and leadership achievement

Max Winter Memorial Scholarship in International Education
Established by Ken and Lynn Winter in memory of their son, Max who was attending UW-L. Ken Winter is amember of the Accountancy faculty at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. to be enrolled full time engaged in the Wisconsin in Scotland program or, if no qualified students can be so identified, then in any other program of study outside of the United States through the Office of International Education
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need shall be considered

Ruth Rorabaugh Witek Scholarship Fund
Established by family and friends in memory of Ruth Ellen, a 1971 UW-L graduate, to support female non-traditional students. Ruth was very active in the bowling club at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior female working toward her first bachelor's degree to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing  
  3. financial need shall be considered
  4. non-traditional married or unmarried female with a child or children

World War II Leon Miller Scholarship
Established by the UW-L faculty and students in the early post-war years.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing
  3. based on character, leadership and scholarship
  4. preference given to a veteran or descendant of a veteran of World War II

Xcel Energy Scholarships
Established by Xcel Energy to benefit students served by Xcel Energy.
Criteria:

  1. two scholarships awarded--one for freshman and one for continuing sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. either a major in computer science, biology with a concentration in environmental, any major within the College of Business Administration or any qualifying major within the College of Liberal Studies with a minor in environmental studies
  3. at least a 3.0 gpa
  4. financial need may be considered
  5. must have come to UW-L from a county within Wisconsin that is served by Xcel Energy which include:   Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Iron, Jackson, La Crosse, Marathon, Monroe, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Price, Rusk, St. Croix, Sawyer, Taylor, Trempealeau, Vernon, Vilas and Washburn

Ziemann Family Scholarship Fund in Exercise & Sport Science
Established by Margaret and Terry Ziemann, '51 graduate of Central and '55 graduate of UW-L in HPER, to support students majoring in the College of Education, Exercise Science, Health and Recreation. Terry's father was a '25 graduate of Central. Terry coached football, basketball and track in the Navy.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior of a La Crosse County or La Crescent high school and to be enrolled full time with a major in the exercise & sport science
  2. above average grade point average
  3. school/community involvement in voluntary service as well as an applicant's demonstrated interest in fitness and sport

Frances Pat MacDougahl Zorn Scholarship
Established in memory of Frances Zorn, a 1932 graduate of UW-L. Earnings from this fund may be directed to such things as scholarships, faculty research, or other programs and projects as directed by the UW-L Foundation Board of Directors.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate student to be enrolled full time
  2. at least a 3.75 gpa
  3. based on scholarship and leadership

Mark Anthony Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in honor of Clown Hall of Fame recipient Mark Anthony.
Criteria:

  1. must be enrolled in a UW-L summer clown camp program
  2. must complete application by January 10 of the year
  3. information required includes: data on clowning experience, essay on why the candidate wishes to receive the award and what they perceive as to what they can accomplish as a clown; individual potential for improvement of their clowning; and potential impact as a clown.
  4. special application required and available from Richard Snowberg, Murphy Library, UW-L

Carol Bassuener NRHH (National Residence Hall Honorary) Award
Established by the Office of Residence Life to honor Carol Bassuener at her retirement in 1999 from the University Housing/Residence Life Office.
Criteria:

  1. must be enrolled full time at UW-L and living in a residence hall on campus
  2. sophomore, junior or senior who must be a member of the Carol Bassuener Chapter of NRHH at UW-L
  3. award shall be made in the spring of each year paid directly to the recipient in one lump sum at that time
  4. no application process--nominated by NRHH

Kent Grimslid Vanguard Scholarship
Established in 1983 by the friends and family of Gale Grimslid in memory of his son, Kent. The Vanguards is a group of students organized to serve the admissions office as ambassadors to visitors of the campus.
Criteria:

  1. member of the UW-L Vanguard organization with a history of outstanding service to be enrolled full time
  2. good academic standing
  3. no application required--recipient selected by Vanguard advisors

Thomas Harris Student Leadership Involvement Award and Endowment Fund
Criteria:

  1. just have completed one semester at UW-L and returning to UW-L the following year (non-graduating)
  2. must be living on campus at time of nomination but student can be living on or off campus the following year
  3. must not be a staff member at the time of nomination
  4. good academic standing and have above a 2.0 gpa
  5. must posses leadership involvement skills, have an awareness in campus and community and help to develop emerging leaders
  6. anyone working on the selection committee will be ineligible for the award
  7. no application required--nominated by residence life

Richard and Sally Koehler Award
Established in 1990 by colleagues, friends and family to honor Dick's 25 years of long-standing service to UW-L students and staff.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate involved in the residence halls and services to students will be considered to be enrolled full time
  2. must be or must have been an undergraduate member of the Office of Residence Life student staff
  3. good academic standing
  4. letters of recommendation from faculty or academic staff will be considered by the committee
  5. no application required--nominated by residence life

Rada Distinguished Alumnus Award
No application procedure--an award will be given to a student in honor of the recipient of the Rada Distinguished Alumnus Award to a department or unit on campus directed by the Rada recipient. Department will set the criteria.

Residence Hall Association Council (RHAC) Representatives Award Fund
Established by friends of the RHAC to support residence hall representative.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior RHAC representative
  2. good academic standing
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. no application required--nominated by the RHAC

Return to Wisconsin
The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents authorized this pilot program offering a 25 percent discount on tuition to the eligible non-resident children and grandchildren of alumni.
Criteria:

  1. new and continuing eligible non-resident include those from states other than Wisconsin and Minnesota as well as residents of US territories and foreign countries
  2. parent, grandparent or legal guardian graduated from UW-L
  3. good academic standing
  4. renewable as long as student makes satisfactory academic progress

The Diane L. Schumacher Enrollment Services Scholarship
Scholarship to recruit entering freshman to UW-La Crosse was established to honor Diane Schumacher, executive director of Enrollment Services Office, at her retirement in 2007.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be an admitted freshman
  2. recipient should be academically talented
  3. no formal application required

Army ROTC Scholarships
ROTC offers scholarships for incoming freshmen or continuing students to attend UW-L. ROTC offers tuition, academic expenses based on competition and not need. Contact the Military Science Department for information.
