College Of Liberal Studies-School Of Education Scholarship Information

All applications for these scholarships listed in this section should be submitted to 235 Morris Hall, unless otherwise specified. No letters of recommendation required unless otherwise stated in scholarship criteria. Deadline: March 1.

Dena Rauk and Russell E. Aldrich Scholarship Fund in Special Education
Established by family and friends in memory of Dena and Russell Aldrich. Russell had a passion for learning and regularly attended classes at UW-L in the continuing education program accumulating more than 160 college credits.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in education, preference shall be given to students with an emphasized interest in special education
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered

Alpha Omega Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Scholarship in Education
Established by the Alpha Omega Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma (Society International) for a senior in Education.
Criteria:

  1. female senior undergraduate or graduate student to be enrolled full time at the undergraduate level with a major in education OR enrolled full time or part time in a graduate program in education
  2. above average grade point average
  3. award will be made in even-numbered years

MaryCatherine Batten Award in Teacher Education
Established in 1978 by a member of the class of 1933 who taught for many years in the Milwaukee school system.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time admitted to the School of Education or Exercise Science, Health and Recreation
  2. one-half of recipients shall be male and one-half of recipients shall be female
  3. preference first given to students with less than a 3.5 gpa
  4. selected in terms of humanistic criteria rather than scholastic achievement
  5. based on sensitivity to student's individual needs; openness to ideas generated by students; ability to establish trust relationships; demonstration of sense of humor; and compatibility and consistency in managing students
  6. must display outstanding teaching potential

Chet Bradley Scholarship Fund in School Health Education
Established in honor of Chet, a '66 UW-L master of science graduate, retiring in the School of Health Education in the Department of Public Instruction.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in school health education or a major in elementary education with a minor in school health education
  2. at least a 2.75 gpa
  3. show strong commitment to the teaching profession in general, school health education specifically
  4. show strong evidence of leadership and future success as teacher
  5. demonstrate positive relationships with others
  6. application should be submitted to 124 Mitchell Hall

Betty Wenzel Brown Scholarship Fund in English Education
Established in memory of Ms. Brown ('41) by a former student who had Ms. Brown for English-Latin in Tomah High School.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior female
  2. need not be enrolled full time
  3. major in English Education (preparing to become an English teacher)
  4. at least a 3.0 gpa
  5. financial need shall be considered

Jessie Caldwell Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Jessie Caldwell who served on the faculty at UW-L from 1924-1958.
Criteria:

  1. outstanding student to be enrolled full time in elementary education
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa

Kathryn S. Cappelen Teaching Scholarship
Established by Kathryn Cappelen, a '45 graduate, to support teaching. She was a long-time employee of the La Crosse School District now retired.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with preference given to entering freshman who are graduates of La Crosse area public schools within the School District of La Crosse
  2. major in either elementary or secondary education leading toward a career in teaching
  3. above average grade point average
  4. financial need should be considered but shall not be determinative of eligibility
  5. most important factors in selecting recipient shall be student's enthusiasm for teaching career, demonstrated leadership qualities, and high humanistic traits. For this purpose humanistic traits shall include friendliness, warmth, consideration of others, and good people skills—traits that promote a happy and nurturing classroom for students of the candidate

Edith Cartwright Scholarship in Education
Established by the friends and family of Edith J. Cartwright who served as Dean of Women at UW-L for many years.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time in the School of Education with a declared major in elementary education, secondary education, or physical education
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. involved in extracurricular activities on campus

D.O. Coate and Emerson G. Wulling Scholarship
Given as a testimonial of the fine work done by Mr. Coate as a teacher and leader of boys, given by members of the Beta Sigma Chi fraternity. Mr. Coate was instrumental in establishing this fraternity.
Criteria:

  1. senior all-around male to be enrolled full time
  2. be preparing for the profession of teaching and must expect to receive his degree within the next year
  3. average or better academic standing
  4. outstanding in personality, a social mixer; one who has done much for the school in varied activities
  5. genial person who loves his fellow men and is liked by them
  6. ambition for further education, have some idea of what it is to be and be making definite progress toward it

Sandra DeBernardi Scholarship in Elementary Education
Established by family and friends in Sandra DeBernardi's memory who was an inspiring first grade teacher in Onalaska. Sandy also was a participant in the UW-L student teaching program. She instilled in them the desire to learn, love animals, and of course save the whales.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered only in a tie-breaker
  4. first preference shall be given to graduates of the Onalaska High School
  5. recipient should intend to use animal care, love and responsibility as an integral approach to well rounding early elementary children

Delta Kappa Gamma--Theta Chapter Scholarship
Presented by the professional honorary educational society, composed of educators in the La Crosse area.
Criteria:

  1. 8P second semester female to be enrolled full time
  2. major on a rotation basis: 2008-2009 award to exercise & sport science; 2009-2010 awarded to elementary education; 2010-2011 award to secondary education
  3. applications should be submitted to 124 Mitchell for '08-'09 and 235 Morris Hall for '09-'10 and '10-'11

Alice P. Drake Memorial Scholarship
Established in accordance with the terms of the will of Alice Drake, a former faculty member.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate to be enrolled full time with elementary education major who has earned the majority of credits at UW-L
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered

Du Pae Memorial Fund
Established by F. Aileen DuPae Lackey in honor of her parents, Frank and Leone DuPae, longtime residents of La Crosse
Criteria:

  1. junior, senior or graduate level student to be enrolled fulltime with a major in education
  2. at least a 3.5
  3. financial need will be considered
  4. demonstrated interest and history in volunteer work, excellence in research skills, interest in or identification with social service work will all be considered
  5. preference would be given to those recipients whose focus is working with special education students

Kenneth & Margaret Fish Scholarship Fund in Elementary Education
Established by Kenneth and Margaret Fish to support teacher education. Kenneth was a 1940 UW-L graduate and was on faculty at UW-L from 1951-1978.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior Wisconsin resident to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education
  2. so long as it is perceived by the committee that a need exists to encourage more men to enter this field, preference (as in a tie-breaker) shall be given to a male
  3. above average gpa
  4. financial need may be considered

Ernest & Olive Gershon Scholarship
Ernest Gershon was a member of the physical education faculty from 1946 to 1983.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore to be enrolled full time with a major in teacher education in physical education, elementary education or secondary education
  2. at least a 2.9 cumulative gpa
  3. must be a participant in a variety of extracurricular activities and have experiences in leadership
  4. if such a student should be engaged in research in teacher education, he/she shall be given special consideration
  5. application should be submitted to 124 Mitchell Hall

Alice O. Gordon Scholarships I & II
Created by a bequest in the will of Alice O. Gordon
Criteria:

  1. senior female who has completed the first three years of teacher education at UW-L
  2. awards shall not be made to women receiving another scholarship in the same year

Alice O. Gordon Elementary, Bessie Bell Hutchison and Grace M. Tripp Scholarships
These scholarships were combined to make a more meaningful award. All three were faculty members in the education department.
Criteria:

  1. senior female to be enrolled full time with a major in education based on outstanding possibilities for effective teaching
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need shall be considered

Alice Hagar Elementary Education Scholarship

NOT AVAILABLE THIS YEAR


Alice Hagar was a librarian of the Training School Library on the Campus of La Crosse State Teachers College in La Crosse. When the Campus School closed in 1974, she moved into the Currciulum and Instruction Center of Morris Hall as a librarian until her retirement in 1982
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education
  2. at least a 3.2 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered only as a tie breaker
  4. at least two awards shall be made
  5. renewable up to a total of four years if recipient meets the criteria and no recipient may receive the scholarship for more than a total of four years

Alta M. Hagen Memorial Endowment Fund
Alta Hagen was a 1947 UW-L graduate in Education. Ms. Hagen bequested to the UW-L Foundation money to establish this scholarship.
Criteria:

  1. preference shall be given to a non-traditional or post-baccalaureate undergraduate student to be enrolled full time with a major in the School of Education with a language arts, social studies or reading emphasis (upper elementary or middle school)
  2. preference shall be given to a female
  3. financial need must be demonstrated
  4. must prove academic success and potential for a career in teaching

Warta Krueger Hall Scholarship

  1.  education major who wants to be a teacher
  2.  financial need shall be considered
  3.  is in a family of a single parent of either sex
  4.  motivated student who has performed high academically

Marian D. Hammes Scholarship in Early Childhood/Elementary Teacher Education
Established to support teachers where Marian Hammes was a faculty member in UW-L teacher education from 1947-1979.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with the following in order of priority: (a) major in early childhood teacher education; or (b) major in elementary teacher education with an emphasis in early childhood
  2. at least a 3.25 gpa
  3. financial need shall be considered
  4. preference shall be given to an applicant who is a single parent

Dorothie Marion Hansen Scholarship Fund in Elementary Education
Established in loving memory of Dorothie Marion Hansen, a 1923 graduate of UW-L, by her niece Beverly Smith and brothers Volney and Henry Hansen.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior preference given to a female to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education
  2. good academic standing

Freda and Arnold Hanson Endowment Scholarship Fund in Elementary Education
Established to honor two long time residents of Viroqua for Viroqua High School graduates planning to become elementary teachers. Freda taught in several one-room grade schools and attended classes at UW-L during nights, weekends and summers to eventually earn a bachelor's and master's degree at the university.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full or part time with a major in elementary education
  2. graduate of Viroqua High School
  3. above average grade point average
  4. financial need should be considered

Troy Harcey/Burger King Endowed Scholarship Fund in Education
Established in 1996 to honor Troy Harcey, football player who was the recipient of the Burger King Scholar Athlete Award for academic and athletic achievement.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in the field of education
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. recipient's character, leadership and rich contributions to the UW-L campus and La Crosse community life to be considered

David and Sis Hogue College Student Development and Administration Scholarship
Established by Dave Hogue, a 1949 UW-L graduate, who served as Dean of Student Affairs for 27 years. Dr. Hogue is a past member of the UW-L Foundation Board of Directors.
Criteria:

  1. graduate student in the college student development and administration program
  2. financial need and promise as a student personnel worker considered

La Crosse Area Retired Educators’ Association Scholarship

  1. start student teaching in Fall 2008 or Spring 2009
  2. must be a graduate of one of the following high schools:  La Crosse Central,  La Crosse Logan, Melrose-Mindoro, Onalaska, West Salem, Bangor or Holmen

Lawrence and Jennifer Johnson University Relations Scholarship
Lawrence is a '94 UW-L graduate in the College Student Development & Administration Program and Jennifer is a '95 UW-L graduate in teacher education.
Criteria:

  1. graduate student to be enrolled full time in the college student development & administration master's program
  2. good academic standing
  3. must be interning with the UW-L Foundation phonathon or interning with the UW-L Alumni Association
  4. preference given to a recipient who desires to make university relations a career

Eleanor M. Kennedy Scholarship in College Student Development and Administration
Established in 1988 by friends and colleagues of Eleanor Kennedy upon her retirement after 24 years of service to the UW-L alumni office.
Criteria:

  1. graduate student to be enrolled full time in the college student development and administration master's degree program
  2. good academic standing
  3. must show interest in service to students, the alumni and the broader campus community

Kristine A. Mason Scholarship Fund
Jane Schley, 1978 UW-L graduate, established this fund in memory of Kristine Mason, a 1973 UW-L undergraduate from the Health, Physical Education & Recreation and received her masters in 1979.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in education with preference given to applicants who are pursuing or have completed a minor, emphasis or concentration in environmental studies or science
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered; provided, however, that among equally qualified applicants, the greatest financial need shall be given preference

Twyla and Robert McFee Scholarship in Elementary Education
Established in memory of Twyla McFee to benefit students who are pursuing a degree in teacher education.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time majoring in elementary education
  2. good academic standing
  3. financial should be considered
  4. demonstrate dedication to education field through involvement in educational professional affiliations or associations

Patricia Mertens Scholarship Fund in Exercise and Sport Science and School of Education
This fund was established by family and friends to recognize Patricia's outstanding service to the students and alumni of UW-La Crosse. Patricia retired from the UW-L Career Services in 1995.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. in odd-numbered years major in exercise and sport science and in even-numbered years a major in the School of Education
  3. at least a 3.0 gpa
  4. financial need may be considered
  5. demonstrate leadership in professionally related activities
  6. application submitted to 124 Mitchell in odd-numbered years and to 235 Morris Hall in even-numbered years

Dane & Eileen Nash Scholarship for Graduate Students in Special Education
Established to recognize academic excellence in the special education program at UW-L
Criteria:

  1. non-traditional (25 years or older) graduate student in the special education program at UW-L
  2. preference given to applicant who must commute a substantial distance to the campus to achieve his/her master's degree

Rhea Pederson Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Rhea Pederson who taught first grade in the Campus School for 26 years.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time in elementary education
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. demonstrate leadership qualites, and has career goal in the field of early childhood education

Wilma Leide Pfiffner Scholarship in Elementary Education
Established by Wilma Pfiffner who is a 1935 UW-L graduate in Education.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full or part time with a major in elementary education
  2. good academic standing
  3. financial need should be considered

Ethel Groom Scheel Scholarship
Ethel Groom Scheel was a 1918 UW-L graduate. This scholarship was established by a bequest from Ms. Scheel.
Criteria:

  1. enrolled full time majoring in elementary education planning to teach early childhood-kindergarten
  2. at least a 2.8 gpa
  3. financial need shall be considered
  4. exhibit strong teaching qualities

William and Georgene Schmidt Scholarship Fund in Education
Established by William, an emeriti from teacher education from 1959-89, for students in education.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education in even-numbered years or a major in secondary education in odd-numbered years
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. in evaluating applicants, the Committee may also consider participation in extracurricular activities

Patrick H. Sebranek Scholarship Fund in English Teacher Education
Established by the Sebranek family in honor of Patrick's 60th birthday. Patrick is a 1968 alum in education with a master's degree in 1971.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior enrolled full time with a major in English teacher education
  2. recipient must be in good academic standing with above average grade point average
  3. financial need may be considered

George M. Snodgrass Scholarship
Created by various college organizations and faculty in memory of former President Snodgrass.
Criteria:

  1. senior to be enrolled full time preparing for teaching
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. all credits taken at UW-L and planning to receive his/her degree the same year as the award
  4. awarded to a female in odd-numbered years ('07-'08) and a male in even-numbered years ('06-'07)
  5. based on leadership and scholarship preparing for teaching

Taylor Family Scholarship in Health Education/Physical Education and Elementary Education
Rollo Taylor, graduate of 1956, served the physical education department from 1965-1991. This fund was set up by the Taylor family to support these departments at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. student to be enrolled full time with a major in health education/exercise & sport science (in even-numbered years) or elementary education (in odd-numbered years)
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. have high teaching potential
  5. application should be submitted to 235 Morris Hall in odd-numbered years and to 124 Mitchell in even-numbered years

June A. Tenckhoff Scholarship in Education
Established in 1987 by June Tenckhoff ('47) to assist needy students in the education field. June served on the UW-L Foundation Board.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in education
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered,
  4. well rounded student, active in campus life
  5. good character, potential for future success in graduate work or teaching profession

Franklin & Laura Beer Trine Scholarship in Education
Established in memory of Franklin who was a 1928 physical education graduate of UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time with a major in education
    Special consideration may be given to:
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. student from southwestern Wisconsin
  4. student belonging to the Order of the Rainbow for Girls or De Molay
Franklin & Laura Beer Trine Scholarship in Education
Established in memory of Franklin who was a 1928 physical education graduate of UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. junior to be enrolled full time with a major in education
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. special consideration given to a student from southwestern Wisconsin
  4. student belonging to the Order of the Rainbow for Girls or De Molay

Agnes A. Van Tassel Scholarship in Elementary Education
Established in memory of Agnes Van Tassel, an inspiring sixth-grade teacher in the La Crosse city schools. A graduate of UW-L, she completed her degree in summer schools as she taught full time. It is hoped that this scholarship will allow others an easier path to helping children.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior female to be enrolled full time with a major in elementary education
  2. at least a 2.0 gpa
  3. financial need shall be considered only in a tie-breaker
  4. upon graduation, recipient must intend and make every good faith effort to teach within the United States of America

D. Russell Wartinbee Scholarship
Presented as a memorial to a graduate of UW-L and a prominent La Crosse music teacher,
Criteria:

  1. enrolled full time with a major in teacher education
  2. based on demonstrated academic ability
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. broadfield social studies and/or music education in secondary education required

Robert and Betty Woodruff Scholarship in Education
Established to honor Robert and Betty Woodruff for serving as role models to the La Crosse Northside community with their demonstrated work ethic and civic and community involvement. Scholarship has been established to help the student trying to attain a degree in the profession of Education.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full
    time with a major in education
  2. good academic standing
  3. committee shall use a scoring system to evaluate applicant as follows: (a) one point for each year attended at Jefferson Elementary School in La Crosse; (b) one point for each year attended at Logan Junior High or Middle School in La Crosse; (c) one point for each year attended at La Crosse Logan High School; (d) one point for demonstrated financial need pursuant to UW-L criteria; (e) one point for the highest grade point average within the pool of other qualified applicants for this scholarship; and (f) the qualified applicant with the greatest total number of points shall receive the scholarship; provided, however, that in cases of a tie, the Committee shall, in its discretion, make the decision.
  4. renew the scholarship for a continuing, qualified recipient; provided, however, that no student may receive the scholarship for more than four years.
  5. on a separate paper, list the scoring system points (a) through (c) with dates of attendance and total number of points and submit with your application

B. J. Young Scholarship
Established to support student scholarships in elementary and secondary education.
Criteria:

  1. first or second semester senior to be enrolled full time in even-numbered years to an elementary major with an additional certifiable major or two minors and in odd-numbered years to a secondary major--double major--one major must be geography or single broadfield social studies major with geography minor
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. highly successful in pre-student teaching clinical experiences
  5. evidence of an understanding of child or adolescent development and ability to develop a positive working relationship with students
  6. evidence of basic understanding of sound principles of teaching and learning
