All applications for these scholarships listed in this section should be submitted to 235 Morris Hall. No letters of recommendation required unless otherwise stated in scholarship criteria. Deadline: March 1.

UW-L Alumni Band Scholarship Fund in Memory of Dr. John L. Alexander
Established for the purpose of providing financial support for a dedicated member of the UW-L marching band.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be enrolled full time at UW-L
  2. recipient must be in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 grade point average
  3. recipient may be a sophomore, junior or senior current member of the marching band and should have at least one year served in the marching band
  4. use Foundation general scholarship application located at http://www.foundation.uwlax.edu/schgeneralapp.html and return application to the Cleary Center.

Thomas H. Annett Scholarship
Funded through Thomas Annett's estate supporting the music department.   Annett was on the music faculty.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in music
  2. good academic standing
  3. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

Thomas & Margaret Annett Scholarship for the Arts
Established in honor of Thomas Annett who served the music department for several years and Margaret who was employed at Murphy Library on the campus for many years.
Criteria:

  1. preferably a senior piano student; if a piano student cannot be identified, the next choice would be a student who plays a stringed instrument
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa  
  3. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

Art Awards from All-Student Art Show
These art awards and nominated by art faculty.   Following is a list of art awards from the All-Student Art Show:   Behind-the-Brewery Gallery, Marion Biehn, Catherine Crail Art Award, Louise Drumm Art Award, Fiorini Metalsmith Award, Carol Hutchins Award, Richard Koehler Art Awards, Milton and Margaret Kosbab Art Award, James Quillin Art Award and Ray Sherin Art Award.

Edward M. Bardill Memorial Scholarship in Photography
Established by the Bardill family and friends in memory of Edward to support photography. Ed Bardill retired from the University in 1988 as an associate professor of photography.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a minor in photography
  2. at least a 3.0 in photography
  3. minimum of 9 credits earned in photography courses
  4. financial need may be considered
  5. must be a Wisconsin resident
  6. even-numbered years the recipient shall be a male and in odd-numbered years recipient shall be a female

Laura and Joe Bowers UW-L Concert Bands Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by Mary Hampton, an emeritus from the economics department, to support the University bands.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time participating as a member of a University concert band
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

Chancellor's Quartet
Scholarship to enhance the string program at UW-L initiated by Chancellor Kuipers when she was Chancellor at UW-L from 1991 to 2000.
Criteria:

  1. live audition is required which will be held in the spring of each year held by the UW-L orchestra conductor, violin, viola and cello instructors on the string faculty
  2. audition requirements are major scales (C,G,Bb,A,E and Ab); melodic minor scales (a,d,f,g#); scales should be played to student's maximum range and at his/her highest controlled speed; one movement of a selection by J. S. Bach; and one movement of a Classical, Romantic or Contemporary Concerto.  
  3. requirements and obligations include:   Quartet will rehearse at least two hours per week, expected to prepare outside of rehearsal, perform as part of a concert program once each semester; provide up to five performance services per semester on behalf of the Chancellor or University; and will be registered members of the UW-L Orchestra.
  4. renumeration from any additional paid performances (weddings, receptions, etc.) not at the request of the UW-L Chancellor will be retained by the individual members of the Quartet

Joseph Cordeiro Scholarship for Students Studying String Instruments
Established by the family and friends of Joseph Cordeiro.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time but does not have to be a music major or minor
  2. member of University Orchestra
  3. proficient in or studying strings (piano or harp are not included in the string category)
  4. good academic standing
  5. entering freshman must submit letter of recommendation from high school orchestra director.   Formal application and solo audition tape required; must be willing to give live audition if requested.

Cordeiro Quintet Fund at the UW-L
Established by Bob & Janet Roth to support a quintet in memory of Joseph Cordeiro.
Criteria: Recipients must be registered members of the UW-L Symphony Orchestra and meet the other following criteria:

  1. Make up:
    a. Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn
    b. Open to any class freshman to super-senior
  2. Auditions:
    a. Completed the preceding spring
    b. Include scales, solo literature and right reading exercise
    c. To be heard by orchestra conductor and appropriate applied faculty
  3. Requirements for quintet members:
    a. Must rehearse two hours per week minimum (one with faculty and one without)
    b. Must perform one concert per semester
    c. Would be available to represent the UW-L Department of Music in high school programs or other events (maximum of two services per semester)
  4. The Committee shall make or announce no awards until the UW-L Music Department scholarships have been awarded and announced.Link to music application

Catherine Crail-Susan Fransway Art Scholarship
Established by Catherine Crail, a former UW-L Librarian, in memory of her daughter, Susan Fransway.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in art
  2. one award should be made to a student in fine arts
  3. if two scholarships are awarded, one should be in fine arts and the second may be in fine arts or commercial arts
  4. based on high quality of art work at UW-L
  5. special application required and available from the art department

Drecktrah Family Scholarship
Established by the Drecktrah family, including Ann, ’71, Gene, ’62, and Ron, ’70, to support the Department of Theatre Arts. 
Criteria:

  1. Freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full-time with a major in theatre arts
  2. Good academic standing
  3. Financial need will be considered

Louise Drumm Art Scholarship
Established from a bequest of a former art teacher for La Crosse schools for art scholarships.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in art
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. special application required and available from the art department


William Estes Choral Music Award
Established to provide scholarships to a student who has demonstrated choral accomplishments.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. apply by submitting a solo audition tape by January 1 for entering freshman and March 1 for continuing students that will be judged on musicianship, tone, color, range, vocal promise, and beauty of voice
  3. be willing to give a live audition if requested
  4. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

Robert and Kip Frederick Fund for Communication Studies and Theatre Arts
This fund has been established with the general purpose of supporting the communication studies and theatre arts department by providing funding for a variety of departmental activities, such as special projects, student scholarships, dignitary visitations and other functions that the selection committee deems appropriate.
Criteria:

  1. to be enrolled full time
  2. odd-numbered years with a major in communication studies and in even-numbered years with a major in theatre arts

Doris Fuka Communication Studies/Theatre Arts Fund
The fund's general purpose shall be the support of the communication studies/theatre departments by providing monies for a variety of departmental activities such as special projects, student scholarships, dignitary visitations, or other functions as determined by the selection committee.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. major in theatre arts for odd-numbered years and communication studies for even-numbered years
  3. entering freshman required to provide a letter of recommendation from respective high school theatre/communication studies teacher
  4. monies can be used for a variety of departmental activities such as special projects, student scholarships, dignitary visitations or other functions determined by the committee

Gertrude and Donald Sandy Gordon Jazz Scholarship Fund
Established by Gertrude Gordon, a long time friend of UW-L, to encourage young people interested in jazz music careers and music students who wish to pursue their music education and training.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with an interest in jazz music
  2. music students or pursuing an undergraduate degree in music
  3. good academic standing with at least a 2.5 gpa
  4. if eligible, may receive a maximum of four years of support

Hoeschler Music Quartet
Fund established by Janet Bowe Hoeschler, a 1940 UW-L graduate, to support the symphony orchestra.
Criteria:

Betty and Dale Kendrick Scholarship for Studio Art in Painting
Established by Betty in memory of her husband, Dale, who was a UW-L faculty member in the art department from 1960 to 1990.
Criteria:

  1. recipient must be enrolled full time declared art major
  2. must have achieved an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher, on not less than 30 credits earned, not transferred credits, at UW-L

Stella Trane Jackson Scholarship
Awarded as a memorial to an outstanding music instructor.
Criteria:

  1. outstanding music student to be enrolled full time
  2. special application required and available from the music department Link to music application


UW-La Crosse Jazz Studies Development Fund
General support of student scholarships in the area of jazz studies at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or currently enrolled student to be enrolled full time who demonstrate an interest and ability in jazz
  2. five to ten minute audition tape must be submitted and should include a classical etude or solo and an excerpt demonstrating jazz style
  3. an improvised solo may be included but is not required
  4. candidate may be expected to audition in person
  5. freshman applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from band/jazz director and list two additional references

Helen Leide Memorial Fund for the Theatre
Established to honor Helen Leide, director of circulations at Murphy Library until her retirement in 1980.   General support of the theatre program by providing monies for a variety of activities such as student scholarships, special projects, dignitary visitations, or other functions that the selection committee deems appropriate to enhance the program.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time
  2. based on scholarship, leadership and demonstrated outstanding potential as a theatre major
  3. entering freshmen required to submit a letter of recommendation from a high school theatre teacher

Mewaldt Music Scholarship
Established by David and Harriet Mewaldt.   Dave served the music faculty from 1959-1982.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time with a declared major in music
  2. must have mastered the technique of woodwind or brass instruments
  3. audition and/or interview may be required
  4. must be involved in at least one major instrumental organization on the UW-L campus
  5. entering freshman must rank in the top 25% and at least a composite ACT 23
  6. continuing students must be in good academic standing
  7. financial need may be considered
  8. if committee approves, renewal of this scholarship would be for the next year with no more than three renewals

Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Journal Foundation/Walter Jay & Clara Charlotte Damm Scholarship
Milwaukee Foundation board working with the Journal Company has established this award to support students at UW-L. If funded, the amount is determined by the Milwaukee Foundation.
Criteria:

  1. undergraduate and graduate student to be enrolled full time
  2. pursuing careers in radio, television or other news and entertainment communication media
  3. preference is given to those students who have a current relationship (e.g., relative of active or retired full or part time employees) with Journal Communications, Inc. or one of its subsidiaries, Journal Communications companies include: Journal Sentinel, Inc., Journal Broadcast Group, Norlight Telecommunications Inc., Journal Community Publishing Group, IPC Print Services, and Prime Net).
  4. financial need should be demonstrated
  5. show scholastic ability based on high school or college transcripts as a measure of academic performance and ability to succeed
  6. scholarship available only if approved by the Milwaukee Foundation annual review

Student Chapter #361 Music Educators National Conference (M.E.N.C.) Scholarship
Established by the Student Chapter #361 of the Music Educators National Conference.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing students to be enrolled full time with a major in music or music education
  2. active participant in MENC
  3. must be in at least one performing organization on the UW-L campus
  4. entering freshman must be planning on a music or music education major and must have been active in at least one performing organization while in high school
  5. audition tape may be required
  6. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

Piano Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
Established to support piano scholarships at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior but must be enrolled currently in an applied piano course to be enrolled full time with a major or minor in music
  2. good academic standing with above average gpa
  3. financial need may be considered
  4. must be accepted into the Department of Music based upon live or taped audition before full faculty
  5. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

James Quillin Memorial Art Scholarship
Established by the family and friends of James Quillin and is intended for students majoring or minoring in art at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman or continuing student to be enrolled full time with a declared major or minor in art
  2. based on scholarship, leadership and demonstrated outstanding potential in art
  3. entering freshman should submit a letter of recommendation from art teacher
  4. special application required and available from the art department

Theodora Richter Communication Studies Scholarship
In appreciation for the many fond memories of her students and colleagues, Mrs. Richter established the first scholarship at UW-L exclusively for speech and theatre majors. Mrs. Richter taught speech at UW-L from 1958-1969.
Criteria:

  1. junior or entering freshman to be enrolled full time with a major in communication studies
  2. priority to be placed on scholastic ability, involvement in forensics, debate and theatre as well as other organizational involvement and general service work
  3. entering freshman required to send a letter of recommendation from a teacher

Lisa Kay Roslansky Art Scholarship
Established in 1982 by Lisa's parents to honor this former UW-L art student.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior female to be enrolled full time with a major in visual arts
  2. at least a 3.5 gpa
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. special application required and available from the art department

Perry St. John Memorial Scholarship in Telecommunications
Established by family and friends in memory of Perry, a radio/television broadcaster, who was often asked to speak and work with classes in the University's Communication Studies Department.
Criteria:

  1. sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in communication studies with an emphasis in telecommunication
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need shall be considered
  4. applicants will be judged on qualities of leadership and overall outstanding performance in telecommunication as well as activities in the campus and/or community

Lindy Shannon Music Scholarship
Established through proceeds from the Lindy Shannon concert recognizing Lindy Shannon's contribution to rock and roll music.
Crieria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in music
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered
  4. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

Paul Stry Music Memorial Scholarship
Established to recognize demonstrated superior performance in classical music.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or first year transfers to be enrolled full time with a major in music, except entering freshmen or first year transfer students may be either music majors or minors
  2. must be enrolled in one of the university's music organizations and also must be taking applied lessons
  3. demonstrated superior performance in classical music
  4. live auditions will be required by applicants, unless waived by committee, or other alternatives such as audio or videotape required
  5. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

UW-L Symphony Orchestra Scholarship Fund
Established for students participating in the UW-L Symphony Orchestra.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time
  2. participant in the UW-L Symphony Orchestra
  3. at least a 2.5 gpa  
  4. qualification shall also be based on a personal audition
  5. performance of string instruments include violin, viola, cello and bass only
  6. special application required and available on the Foundation Web site or from the music department Link to music application

 

Symphonic Brass Quintet Scholarship
Established by Bob and Janet Roth to support a quintet for the symphonic brass.
Criteria: Recipients must be registered members of the UW-L Symphony Orchestra and meet the other following criteria:

  1. Make up:
    a. Two trumpets, one horn, one trombone and one tuba
    b. Recipients must be full time enrolled students at UW-L
    c. There is no major requirement
  2. Auditions:
    a. A "live" audition is required
    b. Auditions will be held during the second semester of the year before the scholarship is awarded
    c. Audition will be heard by: UW-L Orchestra Conductor and members of the UW-L brass and horn faculty
    d. Auditions may be scheduled on regular Music Department audition dates or arrangements for a special audition date may be made with the UW-L Orchestra Conductor
    e. Audition requirements include major scales (C, Ab, G, D and A) and harmonic minor scales (a, d, and f)
    f. Scales should be played at the student's maximum range and at his/her highest controlled speed
    g. Two contrasting solos or two contrasting movements from the same solo that demonstrate the student's musical and technical capabilities
    h. A brief sight-reading exercise provided by the Music Department
    i. Solos may be played with or without accompaniment. If accompanied, student must provide his or her own accompanist
  3. Requirements and Obligations:
    a. Quintet will rehearse a minimum of two (2) hours per week
    b. Students will be expected to prepare outside of the rehearsal time
    c. Quintet will perform as a part of a concert or recital a minimum of once per semester
  4. Remuneration from any paid performances (weddings, receptions, etc) will be retained by the individual members of the quintet.
  5. The Committee shall make or announce no awards until the UW-L Music Department scholarships have been awarded or announced.Link to music application

A.   Richard Tinapp/Robert S. Joyce Endowment Fund in Theatre Arts
Established by the Department to honor Drs. Tinapp and Joyce.   This is a multi purpose fund to support the Theatre Arts Department. If a scholarship is to be awarded below is the criteria.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in theatre arts
  2. above average grade point average

Marie Toland Scholarship
Established by a former student of Marie Toland's to express the student's high regard and respect for this former instructor at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in theatre arts
  2. at least a 3.0 gpa

Robert A. Wessler General Music Scholarship Endowment Fund
Established by Sandra Blaney Sullivan Alderman to recognize and honor Dr. Wessler. Dr. Wessler was a member of the music department from 1972 and retired in 2000. He was an excellent role model for future teachers as he showed his dedication to the field of music education.
Criteria:

  1. at least a junior to be enrolled full time at UW-L with a major in music education with a general music emphasis
  2. least a 3.0 gpa
  3. financial need shall not be considered except as a tie breaker

Max Winter Memorial Scholarship in Photography
Established by Ken and Lynn Winter in memory of their son. Ken is a faculty member of the Accountancy Department at UW-L
Criteria:

  1. to be enrolled full time with a minor in photography
  2. above average grade point average
  3. financial need should be considered

Paul C. and Martha M. Witzke Fund in Music
Established by Paul and Winnifred Witzke in memory of Paul's parents in support of students in music at UW-L.
Criteria:

  1. freshman, sophomore, junior or senior to be enrolled full time with a major in music
  2. show enthusiasm for music and a desire to complete the full music curriculum
  3. above average grade point average
